McAllen and Rossi Score Twice as WPI Defeats Anna Maria to Ring In 2018 Season

Paxton, MA --- Juniors Sean McAllen (Prospect, CT) and Nic Rossi (Howell, NJ) each scored a pair of touchdowns as WPI defeated Anna Maria 54-0 Friday night.

McAllen began the scoring with a five-yard run with 3:44 to go in the first quarter. He struck again with a 12-yarder 3:15 into the second. The Engineers then made it 16-0 with a safety less than a minute later. With 8:43 left in the half, junior Zach Uglevich (Maynard, MA) cashed in with a seven-yard TD rush. Rossi then scored his first with a nine-yard reception in the final minute of the second.

It took only 2:10 for Rossi to haul in a 25-yard score after the break. Senior Erik Fyrer (Ipswich, MA) capped of a three-play, 83-yard drive with a 13-yard TD pass from junior Julian Nyland (Melrose, MA) early in the fourth. Senior Spencer Herrington (Clearfield, PA), who was already 5-5 in extra points, booted a 19-yard field goal with just over 10 minutes to play. Freshman Brandan Winn (Tewksbury, MA) notched his first collegiate TD on a 26-yard run with 2:41 to go.

Nyland racked up 335 yards and three touchdowns on 20-23 passing, as well as 43 yards on five keeps, and zero interceptions. Fyrer led the receivers with 134 yards on eight receptions and a score. Junior Brendan Chipman (Middleboro, MA) followed with 104 yards on a trio of catches. McAllen rushed for a game-best 59 yards.

Defensively, senior Luca Cerasani (Abington, MA) amassed six tackles, including 1.5 for-loss and shared credit on a sack. Junior Stephen Lauro (Suffern, NY) rolled up five solo stops while sophomore Aaron Whitehouse (Tewksbury, MA) collected 45 yards on two interceptions.

Anna Maria saw three quarterbacks with Alex Cohen totaling 38 yards on six completions. Jalin Hudson and Antonio Snell led the rushers and receivers with 30 yards and 25 yards, respectively. Michael Hall made 12 stops (seven solo) as he and Dan Mastromatteo each recovered a fumble. Darrin Cooper chipped in with six tackles (five solo) while two of Mastromatteo's three stops were for-loss.

The Engineers narrowly missed 500 yards of total offense with 494, of which 344 was in the air. The ground game was closer with WPI collecting 150 of the 261 rushing yards. Time of possession was a mere 21 seconds in favor of WPI.

The Boynton Hillers trek to Troy, NY for the annual Transit Trophy game with RPI. Kickoff is slated for noon. Anna Maria remains in Central Mass. and heads to Nichols Friday for a 7pm meeting.
