UMHB tops Louisiana College 51-20

Pineville, Louisiana – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team jumped out to an early lead and then held off Louisiana College's offensive attack as the Cru posted a 51-20 victory over Louisiana College Saturday in Pineville. UMHB improves to 9-0 overall and 8-0 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory and the Cru also clinches at least a share of the ASC title. Louisiana College drops to 2-7 overall and 1-7 in ASC play with the loss.

 

John Mowery hit a 20-yard field goal on the game's opening possession to give UMHB a 3-0 lead 2:29 into the contest. Markeith Miller's one-yard touchdown run made it 10-0 three minutes later and Carl Robinson III hit Byron Proctor with a 14-yard screen pass for a touchdown to make it 17-0 UMHB with 3:23 left in the opening quarter. Leondre James hauled in a pass that tipped off the hands of Cru defensive back Raylon Hickey and raced 77 yards for A Wildcat touchdown, but UMHB blocked the extra point to keep it a 17-6 game. Robinson found DeNerian Thomas with a 38-yard swing pass for a touchdown to stretch it to 24-6 at the end of the first quarter. LC marched 82 yards before Wayne Griffin hit Shedrick Davis with a seven-yard scoring pass to pull the Wildcats to within 24-13. Bryce Wilkerson returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown to put the Cru on top 31-13. LC missed a field goal on its final possession of the first half to leave it at 31-13 at halftime.

 

UMHB added Robinson's six-yard scoring strike to Jonel Reed and 29-yard touchdown run to make it 44-13 and Proctor broke off a 42-yard scoring scamper to push the lead to 51-13. Griffin hit Davis with a 35-yard touchdown pass on another ball tipped by the Cru defense to cut it to the final margin.

 

The Cru rolled up 503 yards of total offense with 254 yards rushing and 249 through the air. UMHB did not force a turnover and the Cru defense failed to score a touchdown for the first time since the week #2 victory at Linfield. The Wildcats finished with 435 yards of total offense with 360 of those passing. The point total and yardage totals are the highest allowed by UMHB this season.

Robinson was 17-19 passing for 226 yards and three touchdowns and he added 36 yards and a TD on the ground. Miller ran for 92 yards and a score and Wilkerson caught seven passes for 77 yards to go with his kickoff return. Tevin Jones led the UMHB defense with a career-high 15 tackles.

 

Griffin was 25-35 passing for 360 yards and three scores for LC. James caught five passes for 113 yards and Davis added eight grabs for 91 yards and two scores. Orel Ledet, Jr. had a team-high 13 tackles for the Wildcats.

 

UMHB extended its winning streak to 24 consecutive games with the victory. The Cru will now return home to host East Texas Baptist in the regular season finale next Saturday. UMHB will face the Tigers in a 1:00 PM kickoff at Crusader Stadium.
