Hartford, Conn. - First-year RB Colin Beaulieu (Bethany, Conn.) rushed for 125 yards on 10 carries and scored his first two career touchdowns on a 55-yard punt return and a 72-yard run to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 63-14 victory over the visiting Bowdoin College Polar Bears in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) football action this afternoon at Jessee/Miller Field. Trinity, ranked No. 2 in New England, improves to 6-0 with its 15th win in a row and its 18th straight triumph in a row over the Polar Bears, and remains alone at the top of the conference standings. Bowdoin drops to 0-6 with its 14th consecutive setback.
Trinity scored early and often, even before its first play from scrimmage, when Beaulieu returned the first punt of the game to the house for his first touchdown as a Bantam 3:16 into the first quarter. The Bantams scored twice more in the opening stanza on a 23-yard run by junior RB Max Chipouras (Longmeadow, Mass.) and a 24-yard scoring strike up the middle from senior tri-captain QB Sonny Puzzo (West Caldwell, N.J.) to classmate Cliff David (Ambler, Pa.). Bowdoin got on the board 2:15 into the second quarter, engineering an 11-play, 75-yard drive that finished with a six-yard scoring scramble by rookie QB Griff Stalcup (Manchester, Vt.). Stalcup completed a pair of 23-yard passes to senior WR Nick Vailas (Boston, Mass.) to highlight the Polar Bear drive.
Trinity erupted for four touchdowns in the final 8:40 of the first half to put the game away. Chipouras starting off the 28-0 run with an eight-yard run to paydirt that gave him a College-record 28 career rushing touchdowns, breaking the mark of 27 held by Evan Bunker '14. Puzzo scored on a 14-yard run with 5:08 on the clock, and the first of two interceptions by Bantam sophomore Ian McDonald (Avon, Conn.) set up Beaulieu for his scoring sprint down the right sideline with 3:27 left before the break. Puzzo connected with rookie WR Jonathan Girard (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), who totaled all of his game-high 123 receiving yards on six catches in the first half, for a 34-yard touchdown pass with 45 seconds on the clock for the final score of the first half. Trinity did have some excitement on its PAT's late in the second quarter, as a fumbled snap allowed Puzzo to toss a two-point conversion pass to David following Beaulieu's touchdown and the PAT kick after Girard's touchdown sailed wide to make the score, 49-7, at intermission. Trinity sophomore RB Shelby Grant (Darien, Conn.) added a three-yard touchdown run and Polar Bear junior TE Brian Thompson (Dover, Mass.) caught a four-yard pass in the end zone from junior QB Noah Nelson (Falmouth, Maine) in the third quarter to finish up the scoring.
Trinity finished with 571 total yards, including 317 on the ground, to 216 for Bowdoin, while the Polar Bears possessed the ball 35:31 of the 60 minutes. Puzzo finished 12-for-15 passing for 188 yards in the first half before yielding to three different backup quarterbacks who combined to throw five passes after halftime. Stalcup completed six of 16 pass attempts for 80 yards and two interceptions. Chipouras added 63 rushing yards and DeNicola had 55 yards on the ground, while rookie QB Robert Kollmer (Howard Beach, N.Y.) had 55 rushing yards for Bowdoin. Trinity junior WR John Spears(Boston, Mass.) caught five passes for 85 yards and Vailas paced the Polar Bears with seven grabs for 82 yards.
On defense, Bantam senior CB Dominique Seagears (Baltimore, Md.) and junior LB Sean Smerczynski (Topsfield, Mass.) had five tackles each, while junior S Chandler Colberg (Madison, Conn.) totaled four tackles and two tackles for loss, and senior S John Medina (Pinecrest, Fla.) added three tackles and two pass breakups. Bowdoin sophomore DB Matthew Williams (Conley, Ga.) led all tacklers with seven solo hits, while junior DB Jack Whiting (Fairfield, Conn.) notched five tackles and a sack, and senior DB Henry Little (Staten Island, N.Y.) intercepted a pass. Sophomore Michael Chen (Crystal Lake, Ill.) was a bright spot on special teams for Bowdoin with six attempts for an average of 40.7 yards, while Beaulieu and rookie Taurian Taylor (Albany, N.Y.) totaled 179 yards on five kick returns between them for Trinity.
