Rowan Football Suffers 34-3 Setback At #14 Wesley

DOVER, DE – The Rowan University football team had a 34-3 loss at 14th-ranked Wesley in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game on Saturday.

The Profs drop to 3-4 overall and 2-4 in the conference. The Wolverines improve to 6-1 with a 6-0 NJAC mark.

Running back E.J. Lee (so. Germantown, MD/Northwest) led the Wesley attack with 108 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries. Quarterback Khaaliq Burroughs (jr. Palmyra, NJ/Paul VI) was 22-of-29 for 269 yards and two scores. Wide receiver James Okike (sr. Yeadon, PA/Monsignor Bonner) caught eight passes for 142 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Linebacker Samer Manna (sr. Germantown, MD/Northwest) totaled 14 tackles, one for a loss. Linebacker Mike Sabino (sr. Felton, DE/Lake Forest) produced eight stops, including one for a loss. Defensive end Isaiah Ingram (sr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) and defensive tackle Stephen Yorkman (sr. Bowie, MD/Bowie) each tallied seven tackles. Ingram added two sacks while Yorkman had 1.5.

Rowan running back John Mannion (jr. Verona, NJ/James Caldwell) rushed for 107 yards on 25 attempts. Quarterback Quinn Collins (so. Elk Twp., NJ/Delsea Reg.) went 8-for-15 for 111 yards. Wide receiver J.J. Kulcsar (so. Haworth, NJ/Bergen Catholic) made three receptions for 82 yards.

Linebackers Chris Noesges (sr. Freehold, NJ/Manalapan) and Godwin Asamoah (jr. Edison, NJ/Edison) recorded nine and eight tackles respectively. Defensive backs Quincy Jenkins (so. Williamstown, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) and Shaquille Lee (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) and defensive lineman Kristian Lewis (sr. Union, NJ/Union) registered six stops apiece. Lewis added a sack.

Lee put the Wolverines on the board early with a 45-yard TD run on Wesley's first offensive play (11:34). On the Profs' next drive, they were able to drive to the Wolverines' 15 but turned the ball over on a fumble. Wesley went ahead 14-0 at the 11:38 mark of the second quarter after a 10-play, 80-yard drive. Lee had his second scoring run from two yards out.

Rowan went 66 yards on its next possession to the Wesley 11. The Profs had to settle for a 28-yard field goal from kicker Tyler Knighton (sr. Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro) to cut the deficit to 14-3 (8:53). With time winding down in the frame, the Wolverines took over at their 16 with 3:57 on the clock. They went 84 yards on nine plays and Lee picked up his third score of the day with a five-yard carry (0:32). The extra point failed and Wesley led 20-3 at the break.

In the third quarter, the Wolverines started a possession at their 10-yard line. On third-and-12, Burroughs hit Okike for a 92-yard score and Wesley increased its lead to 27-3 (7:22). The Wolverines tacked on their final points in the fourth period. Burroughs found Okike for a 16-yard touchdown (7:15), concluding an 11-play, 49-yard drive.

Next week, Rowan is on the road again at Salisbury University on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 1 p.m.
