Rhodes suffers first overtime loss of the season

More news about: Rhodes

San Antonio, Texas – It was a disappointing loss Saturday night for Rhodes football who led 20-7 before Trinity University came back to tie the game 34-34 and ultimately took the 40-34 conference win.

Rhodes, trailing 7-3, came back to score 17 straight points before Trinity answered with 17 consecutive points themselves. The Tigers took a 24-20 lead on a trick play. In their drive, on 4th and 13, Trinity set up in punt formation, only to pull out a 46-yard touchdown to take a lead. That lead would be very short-lived as Rhodes scored two back-to-back rushing touchdowns.

Travis Tidmore's interception near the end of the third quarter resulted in a Rhodes touchdown when quarterback PJ Settles ran for two yards which gave the Lynx a 27-24 advantage after nine plays.

Cord Given's one yard rush gave the Memphis squad a 34-24 advantage. A Trinity 91-yard kickoff return closed that gap to three points before Colby Doyal's 48-yard field goal tied the game as regulation came to a close.
Trinity won the overtime coin toss and chose to play defense first. Two incomplete passes and a Cord Given rush forced the Lynx to try for the field goal. Lynx senior Kyle Edmiston missed the 37 yard attempt, turning the ball over to Trinity who rushed for seven yards. Trinity put the game away on an 18-yard pass to Tommy Lavine for his third touchdown of the game.

Lavine not only scored the game-winning touchdown, but also the first one of the game and the one which gave Trinity their 24-20 lead.

Settles passed for 174 yards and rushed for 91 yards to lead Rhodes' run game. Close behind him was Given with 86 yards. He finished with two touchdowns.

Settles connected with Carter King for a 23-yard reception to give Rhodes a 19-7 advantage before Edmiston connected with the extra point. Edmiston finished the game with 10 points as he went two-for-three in field goals and four successful extra points. His long of the day was from 42 yards out.

Josh Lucas made five receptions for 74 yards including a 26-yard reception in the second quarter.

Turner Kim punted for 170 yards, averaging 34 yards over five punts.

Defensively, Rhodes tallied three sacks including two by Trent Holt. He totaled five yards for loss on the day while Jack Skipper's lone sack set the Tigers back four yards.

On the day, Rhodes edged Trinity in total offense (405-396), out-rushing the Tigers 231-97. Rhodes also maintained longer possession during the game, keeping the ball for 38:37 while Trinity maintained possession for 21:23.

Rhodes has a bye week before travelling to Centre College on October 21. The Lynx are now 2-4 on the season.
