WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University football team rolled up more than 600 yards in total offense Saturday afternoon in a 47-24 ODAC victory over pre-season favorite Emory and Henry.
Shenandoah (4-1, 2-0 ODAC) saw quarterback Hayden Bausermanthrow for 495 yards on a school record 40 completions in 61 attempts to take out the Wasps (2-3, 1-1). The Hornets added another 108 yards rushing on 30 carries.
Bauserman threw TD passes of 9, 11, 10, 43 and 32 yards to go along with four Jacob Newton field goals in the squad's second straight win over E&H.
Bauserman, the nation's leading passer, has thrown for at least 300 yards and four touchdowns in all five games this season.
Leading 27-24 after Emory & Henry made a game of it thanks to two touchdowns to start the second half, SU put the game out of reach as Bauserman connected with Jalen Hudson for a 41-yard TD pass at the 8:27 mark of the third.
Bauserman hit Hudson on a 3rd-and-13 screen pass and Hudson did the rest, outracing a host of defenders on his way to the end zone.
The scoring play started a run in which Shenandoah scored the final 20 points of the ballgame.
Coach Scott Yoder's club led 27-10 at the half, thanks to 278 yards passing from Bauserman, but E&H climbed back with 75- and 79-yard drives to make it 27-24 with 9:34 left in the third.
Sixty-one seconds later, Hudson was in the end zone and Shenandoah was able to coast home to the victory.
SU was 7-for-8 inside the red zone with Newton setting a new school record by hitting field goals of 31, 30, 32 and 25 yards.
The lone time that Shenandoah was unsuccessful in the red zone, seeing a 4th-and-goal pass from 1 go incomplete with 43 seconds to play in the first half, was mitigated when Nate Hill picked off Wasps quarterback Kevin Saxton two plays later to give SU the ball back with 26 seconds left.
Bauserman hit Michael Ashwell (11 catches for 139 yards) for 29 yards to put the Hornets in field goal range and Newton split the uprights on fourth down to give the hosts the 17-point halftime lead.
Senior Cory Bell, who finished the day with 100 yards rushing, had 94 of those yards in the first half as Shenandoah held the ball for just over 20 minutes.
Defensively, the Hornets picked off Saxton twice, had three fourth-down stops and posted a pair of sacks. TJ Heflin led the team with 12 tackles.
