Union wins fourth straight, 28-27 at Morrisville State

MORRISVILLE, NY -- Sophomore defensive end Vincent DiCaterino had three sacks and sophomore wide receiver Griffin Beal produced 199 all purpose yards with two touchdowns to lead Union College to a 28-27 non-league victory at Morrisville State University Saturday at Drake Field. Union improved to 4-1, winning four straight for the first time since 2012, while the Mavericks fell to 2-2.

Union won a third straight road game for the first time since 2005. That season, Union went 9-0 in the regular season and 1-1 in the NCAA playoffs.

DiCaterino matched his career high of three sacks set on September 9 vs. Coast Guard, and had seven tackles with a forced fumble. Beal had a 31 yard receiving touchdown and a 95 yard kickoff return for a score. He finished with a team high 66 receiving yards and 133 yards in kick returns. Nick Cascione was 13 for 20 with two touchdowns and one interception. Derek Khnaizir had 50 yards rushing and a score on 20 carries while  Jake Lombardo produced a season best and game high 15 tackles with one for a loss and a forced fumble. Union had 211 yards in total offense.

Brandon Gwinner was 30 for 53 with no interceptions and 287 yards along with three touchdowns for Morrisville State. Joseph Faniel had a game high 161 yards receiving with a score and Gram Nelson rushed for 70 yards. Michael Bodnar had 10 tackles.

Khnaizir opened the scoring with 6:54 remaining in the first quarter. His five yard run capped a nine play, 53 yard drive in 4:07. Cascione found Beal for a 31 yard touchdown with just 47 seconds remaining in the period to close out an eight play, 59 yard drive in 4:21, and it was 14-0 after the first quarter.

Faniel put the Mavericks on the board 8:44 into the second quarter. The drive consumed 6:57 and marched 83 yards on 17 plays. Later in the quarter, Jason Nelson intercepted a fourth down pass at the Union 12 to stop a potential tying score. But with five seconds remaining in the half, Petrit Boga caught a 14 yard touchdown pass from Gwinner.to close out another long drive (13 plays, 76 yards, 2:06). It was 14-14 at halftime.

The only scoring of the third came from the Dutchmen. Travis Demby's three yard touchdown catch from Cascione made it 21-14 with 5:51 left. That drive went 5:16 with 53 yards in 11 plays. Bobby Law recovered a fumble forced by DiCaterino at the Morrisville 31, but Union could not convert. Morrisville knotted it up again at 21-21 with 11:43 left in the fourth on Gilbert's seven yard rushing TD after a 10 play, 65 yard drive in 4:13. But on the ensuing kickoff by Kinsey Williams, Beal got it at the Union five yard line and took it all the way, 95 yards for the score with 11:28 up, and Union led 28-21.

Back came the Mavericks, taking over at their own 48 with 6:34 to play. six plays and 2:57 later, Gwinner hit Boga again, this time for 10 yards, with 3:37 left. But the extra point attempt failed. Morrisville had one more shot with 2:24 left from the Mavericks' 49. But after five plays and just five yards gained, a pass was incomplete on 4th and 19.

Union will host St. Lawrence on October 7 at 1 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field. The Liberty League opener will be the first home game for the Dutchmen since September 9.
