Grove City earns 2nd straight win, 21-14 at Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- Led by a punishing, time-consuming running game and stout defense, the Grove City College football team pulled out a 21-14 victory Saturday afternoon at Waynesburg in Presidents' Athletic Conference play at Wiley Stadium. Grove City, winners of two straight, is now 2-1 in the conference.

Sophomore running back Wesley Schools ran for 163 yards on 33 attempts while sophomore quarterback Randall Labrie added 76 yards and the eventual winning touchdown on 10 attempts. 

Defensively, Grove City held Waynesburg to 78 yards of offense on 23 plays in the second half. Grove City ended each of Waynesburg's final three possessions by intercepting passes. Sophomore cornerback Jacob Ross intercepted a Tyler Perone pass at the Grove City 36 with 19 seconds remaining to clinch the victory.

Earlier in the quarter, sophomore cornerback Jackson McFall and senior free safety Kyle Beyer intercepted passes near midfield.

Grove City broke a 14-14 tie with 2:26 left in the third quarter when Labrie scored on a one-yard sneak. That capped a 19-play, 86-yard drive that used 9:24 of clock. Grove City went 2 for 2 on fourth downs on the drive as Labrie runs picked up the conversion each time. 

Grove City took a 7-0 lead wth 5:15 remaining in the opening quarter when Labrie fired an 18-yard touchdown pass to freshman wide receiver Cody Gustafson. A 51-yard run by Schools set up the touchdown. 

Perone's seven-yard touchdown pass to Austin Wilson on the first play of the second quarter tied the game 7-7. Grove City answered with an 11-play, 75-yard drive that Schools capped with a three-yard touchdown run. Sophomore kicker Mitch Causer kicked the second of his three extra points. The drive consumed 5:05.

Waynesburg forged the 14-14 tie with 20 seconds left in the half as Perone threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Chad Walker.

Gustafson led Grove City with five receptions for 72 yards. The Wolverines finished with 237 rushing yards and 330 total yards. Labrie went 8 of 16 for 93 yards. Grove City owned possession for 19:45 in the second half. For the game, the Wolverines held a 31:26-28:34 advantage.

Ross and freshman safety Patrick Mark each recorded eight tackles for Grove City. Ross also forced a fumble.

Waynesburg's Perone went 16 of 34 for 173 yards.

Grove City will host conference foe Thomas More next Saturday at 2 p.m. in the annual Homecoming game at Robert E. Thorn Field.
