Last Play Finally Goes Right for GTs; Geneva Remains Perfect on the Road

More news about: Geneva

Greenville, Pa. – The last play finally went right for the Golden Tornadoes on Saturday at Thiel. Geneva's tremendous special team squad blocked the Tomcats' field goal that would have tied the game at 27. Reed McKown's block avoided overtime attempt while Zach Hall's quick snatch and touchdown return lifted Geneva 33-24 over Thiel. The thrilling win improves Geneva's overall record to 2-2, 1-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC). The Golden Tornadoes remain perfect on the road with victories at Bethany and Thiel. The last play decision lowers Thiel's record to 1-3, 1-1 in the PAC.

Geneva never allowed Thiel to take the lead but the quick scoring comfort faded in the fourth. Trewon Marshall's three rushing touchdowns combined with Andrew Dowler's good field goal were only enough to keep the game at 24 points apiece with less than two minutes left in the game.

Bryan Stafford's 48 yard quarterback rush set up Dowler for his second good field goal from 21 yards out. The three points allowed the Golden Tornadoes to retake the lead 27-24 with 1:21 left on the clock.

Zach Hall's back-to-back air stops ate the clock, setting the stage for his and McKown's electrifying play.

Marshall posted his third game breaching 200 rushing yards. The junior running back out of Leetsdale finished with 227 yards, for a season average of 212.5 yards per game. His three touchdown performance raised his season total to 850.

Bryan Weyant led Geneva's defense with 8.5 tackles. Joe Shively tallied six tackles and a block. Jared Hogue and Hall each finished the game with a defensive break up.

The Golden Tornadoes will enjoy the schedule bye week before hosting the Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets on Saturday, October 7 at 3:00 p.m. The afternoon conference match up will host Geneva's 2017 Homecoming.
