UMHB football tops Texas Lutheran 50-7

Belton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team scored on its opening possession and never looked back as the top-ranked Cru rolled to a 50-7 victory over Texas Lutheran Saturday night in Belton. UMHB improves to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in American Southwest Conference play. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the ASC.

 

The Cru intercepted a TLU pass on the game's opening drive and cashed it in nine plays later. T.J. Josey capped the 59-yard drive with an 11-yard touchdown strike to give UMHB a 7-0 lead. A Texas Lutheran fumble setup John Mowery's 38-yard field goal to push it to 10-0 Cru with 4:18 left in the first quarter. Mowery added a 24-yard field goal early in the second quarter and Markeith Miller scored on a two-yard run to put the Cru up 19-0 at halftime.

 

Miller raced 27 yards for another touchdown on the opening possession of the second half to make it a 26-0 UMHB lead. Josey added a nine-yard touchdown run and Kyle Jones hit Jonel Reed with a 24-yard touchdown toss to give the Cru a 40-0 edge after three quarters. Mark Frankhouser connected on a 39-yard field goal in his first collegiate football game and De Jackson returned a TLU fumble 20 yards for a touchdown to close out the Cru scoring. Austin Mathews scored on a five-yard run with 27 seconds remaining to allow the Bulldogs to avoid the shutout.

 

UMHB threw for 333 yards and amassed a season-high 482 yards of total offense. The Cru defense limited Texas Lutheran to 150 yards of total offense, evenly split between the ground and passing game. UMHB forced five turnovers and converted each of those takaways into points.

 

Josey was 11-21 through the air for 145 yards and a touchdown and he added 25 rushing yards and another score. Jones hit 11-14 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown. Miller ran for 62 yards and two touchdowns. Reed posted career-highs with seven catches for 132 yards and a TD. Jacari Reed led the Cru defense with a career-high nine tackles and Reggie Wilson, Jefferson Fritz and Santos Villarreal all recorded interceptions for UMHB.

 

Kyle Grona was 6-11 passing for TLU for 53 yards, but he was picked off three times. Chris Monroe ran for 45 yards on six carries and Jordan Braden added 38 yards on 14 attempts. Kedrick Ward had a team-best nine tackles and added an interception for the Bulldogs.

 

The Cru has now won 18 consecutive games overall and UMHB also extended its win streak over the Bulldogs to 18 victories in a row. The Cru will return to action with a 6:00 PM kickoff at Southwestern University next Saturday in Georgetown. It will be the first time UMHB has faced the Pirates on the gridiron.
