More news about: Union

MILTON, MA – Senior quarterback Nick Cascione completed 77% of his passes as the Union College football team defeated host Curry College, 17-14 at Walter M. Katz Field Saturday afternoon. The Dutchmen are now 3-1 with three straight wins, while the Colonels lost for the first time in four games this season.

Union has matched last season's win total, and the Dutchmen are off to the best four game start since a 3-1 mark in 2009. The last time the Dutchmen had won back-to-back road games was in 2007 when Union won at Rochester (Sept. 22) and at Merchant Marine (Sept. 29). The last overall three game winning streak for Union was in 2012 when the Dutchmen won four straight during an eventual 6-4 record that season.

Cascione was 13 for 17 with 172 yards and a touchdown without an interception. Griffin Beal had 74 yards on five receptions with a touchdown and Alex Kaplanovich caught three passes for 73 yards. Brett Waller rushed for a career high 110 yards, including a late 67 yard run as one of his six carries. Evan Gilland, Jake Lombardo and Bobby Law each had seven tackles for Union. Gilland also had a 34 yard interception return.

Alex Corvese was 20 for 32 for 191 yards and a touchdown for Curry. Sean Amaru had 40 yards rushing and Corvese added 39 on the ground with a score. Spencer Tyler led all receivers with 10 catches for 123 yards and Steven Grogan had a team best seven tackles with two for losses for the Colonels.

Union had 264 yards in total offense including 92 on the ground, while Curry finished with 292 yards including 101 rushing yards.

The only scoring of the first half came with 7:57 left in the first quarter. Jonathan Schaible kicked a 25 yard field goal to cap a seven play, 24 yard drive in 3:45. The drive started when Gilland intercepted a pass to the Union 35 and returned it to the Curry 31 with 10:52 left in the quarter.

Union threatened early in the second quarter. On the seventh play of a drive, Hunter Atwood forced a fumble that was recovered by Dan Farrell at the Curry 23 with 14:20 remaining. Curry had a long drive that didn't produce points at the end of the first half. A Marc Mrozek 36 yard field goal attempt was blocked by Sebastian Lubrano, as time expired on the 10 play, 50 yard drive.

Coast Guard took a 7-3 lead as Corvese scored on a five yard run with 1:02 remaining in the third, wrapping up a nine play, 43 yard drive in 3:18. But Union regained the lead for good 45 seconds into the fourth as Beal caught an 18 yard touchdown pass from Cascione for a 10-7 lead. Waller then had a nine yard run with 5:12 to play for a 17-7 advantage. That drive consumed 7:50 off the clock with 67 yards in 12 plays. The drive was extended with a Curry penalty on a 4th-and-15 from the Colonels' 18.

Curry pulled to within three at 17-14 with 1:31 left in regulation. Tyler hauled in an eight yard pass from Corvese, finishing a 12 play, 79 yard drive in 3:37. Waller's 67 yard run on a 3rd-and-21 from the Union 29 in the final minute put the game away.

Union has a third straight non-league road game next week as the Dutchmen play at Morrisville State September 30 at 1 p.m.
