Rochester Scores Two 4th-Quarter TDs to Top Alfred State

More news about: Rochester

EDWIN FAUVER STADIUM - Emanuel Calmar and Dan Bronson scored touchdowns in the fourth quarter as the University of Rochester rallied to defeat Alfred State College in its home opener.

Calmar ran five yards through left tackle to tie the score at 7-7 with 12:16 left in the game. It ended a 12-play, 91-yard scoring drive. The Yellowjacket defense held Alfred State to a 3-and-out on the next possession and the Pioneers punted to the UR 38.

Matt Gallagher, in his second career start for Rochester, directed a seven-play, 62-yard drive which ended with a 24-yard TD pass to Bronson in the back of the end zone. Paul Tricarico's PAT made it 14-7 with 7:04 left.

The key play was an encroachment penalty against Alfred State. Rochester faced 4th-and-1 at the ASC 37. The five-yard penalty put the ball on the 32. Gallagher threw an eight-yarder to Bronson on first down, then hit him the back of the end zone for a touchdown.

Alfred State had two more possessions. After the UR go-ahead touchdown, the Pioneers drove from their own 30 to the 42 where Joe Moscato made a tumbling catch of Hunter Evingham's pass down the middl. The 25-yard gain set up the Pioneers at the Rochester 33. Chris Meadows rushed for five yards, but Evingham threw three straight incompletions. The Yellowjackets took over at their own 28.

Calmar carried five straight times to the AS45. On 3rd-and-4, ASC's John Lauretti punched the ball away from Calmar, but he was able to dive on it. UR punted into the end zone. Evingham hit two passes, moving the ball to his own 42, but his final pass was deflected under a heavy rush from Justin Warner.

Alfred State took a 7-0 lead just before halftime when Jalen Long made a leaping catch in the end zone of Evingham's pass and Zach Goodwin added the PAT. A turnover and ensuing penalty set up the Pioneers for the scoring drive.

Gallagher marched Rochester from its own 42 down to the ASC 20. On 2nd-and-3, his pass was intercepted by Michael Zimmerman and returned 31 yards to the ASC 45. A personal foul was assessed against Rochester and the ball went to the 40.

Evingham missed Moscato on first down, then hit him for 11 yards on second down. On 1st-and-10 from the UR 29, he threw it and Long outjumped a defender just inside the goalline for a touchdown.

Late in the third quarter, he was driving the Pioneers to a potential score when his pass was intercepted by Konner Oakes at the four and returned four yards to the eight. That started the tying TD drive.

Rochester totaled 331 yards in offense – 135 rushing and 196 in the air. Calmar carried 29 times for 120 yards and one TD. Gallagher completed 18 of 29 passes for 196 yards, one TD, and one INT. Bronson caught eight passes for 96 yards. Calmar had three catches for 27 yards.

For Alfred State, Meadows gained 61 net yards on 17 carries. The Pioneers had a net of 73 yards rushing and 177 in the air for 250 total. Evingham completed 15 of 32 throws with one TD and one INT.

ASC is 0-2 and is idle next week. The Pioneers play at NY Maritime in two weeks. Rochester is 1-1 overall. The Yellowjackets play their next two games on the road – at Alfred on September 23, at Becker College in Massachusetts on September 30.
