Benedictine Stops St. Norbert

DE PERE, WI - The Benedictine University football team scored in all four quarters and did not trail in notching a 29-7 win on the road over St. Norbert College.

The teams traded punts to begin the game on the first two possessions. Starting at the five-yardline, Benedictine used 11 plays to march 95 yards for the first points of the game. Ryan Sample completed six passes on the drive, including a 47-yard connection with Jonathan Roberts. Three of the completions resulted in first downs. Joshua Williams opened the scoring by plunging in from two yards out with 7:01 to go in the opening quarter. Jacob Czerniakowski ran in for a two-point conversion to make the score 8-0.

The next two possessions for each team saw turnovers with Victor Johnson picking a pass for Benedictine. Taking over with just 1:29 left in the first half, Benedictine scampered down the field to take a 15-0 lead. Brandon Moore reeled in an eight-yard touchdown with only two seconds remaining in the half. Williams helped pace the drive with a 33-yard catch.

St. Norbert turned the ball over twice to start the second half. Mark Hammond intercepted a pass deep in the Benedictine side of the field. Following a punt, Evontrae Pierce forced a fumble that was picked up by Danny Drummond in the endzone to push the lead to 22-0 with 6:59 left in the third. St. Norbert quickly answered with the only score, a 57-yard pass play.

The defense stopped St. Norbert on consecutive plays from the one-yardline to force a turnover on downs at the end of the third. The final touchdown of the afternoon came on a big play as Sample hit Moore for a 75-yard breakaway, making the score 29-7 with 8:24 remaining.

Offensively, Benedictine finished with 538 yards including 419 through the air. Sample completed 26 passes for 374 yards with two scores. Moore caught eight passes for 181 yards and two scores. Dean Pauley snared seven passes for 75 yards. Williams ran for 59 yards on 18 carries with a touchdown. Benedictine ran 85 plays for an average of almost seven yards per play.

The defense forced three turnovers and notched seven sacks, limiting the hosts to just 197 total yards. Drummond finished with 13 tackles to lead the team, notching a fumble recovery and two sacks. Pierce logged seven stops with a forced fumble and two sacks. Jack Drummond also finished with a pair of sacks. Grant Klaver punted seven times for an average of 41 yards per kick, pinning St. Norbert inside the 20 on three occasions.

Benedictine (1-1) continues the non-conference schedule next Saturday at Alma College in Michigan.
