Brockport Blows By Ithaca In 31-0 Shutout

More news about: Brockport

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The No. 25 College at Brockport football team posted another impressive result on Saturday afternoon, moving to 2-0 on the season with a convincing 31-0 win over Ithaca College. The game marks the first time since 2002 that the Golden Eagles have blanked the Bombers.

After a back-and-forth first quarter of play that featured fourth down stops for both teams, The Golden Eagles got on the board with 0:35 seconds remaining in the quarter when Joe Germinerio faked a handoff to Justin Morrison, and tucked it himself, finding a whole up the middle and sneaking into the end zone with a six yard rush. Brett Renzi nailed the extra point try, making it 7-0 Brockport at the end of the quarter.

After three straight drives resulted in punts to begin the second stanza, the Green and Gold were able to put together another scoring drive after a muffed Bomber punt put them at the Ithaca 37 yard-line to start. The offense took the ball all the way to the Ithaca 11, but were stalled on third down and settled for a 28-yard field goal from Renzi, putting them up 10-0.

Ithaca went three-and-out on the ensuing drive, allowing the Brockport offense to get right back to work, finding the end zone yet again to take a commanding 17-0 first half lead. On a third and 20 from their own 43 yard line, Germinerio launched a 57-yard pass right into the arms of his new deep threat,DaQuan Hubbard, who caught it in stride and cruised into the end zone. In the first two games of the season, Germinerio and Hubbard have connected for 67 and now 57-yard touchdown passes.

On the first play of the next Ithaca drive, the defensive line got some pressure on the quarterback, forcing an errant pass that was intercepted by Julius Brunson, his second of the season. The Golden Eagle defense was dominant for the entire first half, allowing just one Bomber first down while holding them to 30 yards from scrimmage.

Brockport's 17-0 advantage would hold through most of the third quarter until they found the end zone yet again at the 03:39 mark, extending their lead to 24-0. It was Germinerio again showing off his precision on the deep ball, this time finding Tyree Brown who made a leaping grab in the end zone for the 40-yard touchdown reception.

They'd add one more score in the fourth quarter, using a methodical 14-play, 71-yard drive that used 08:18 of clock. Freshman Camron Abalos was the ball carrier on this scoring play, finding a hole on the left side of the line for the 4-yard touchdown rush.

Overall, the Golden Eagles dominated Ithaca on both sides of the ball, putting up 442 yards of total offense while holding the Bombers to 229. Germinerio had another impressive outing, throwing for 268 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 91 and adding a score on the ground.

Matt Szymanski and Tim Terry led the defensive unit with six tackles apiece, while Brunson and Jake O'Connell both collected interceptions. The Golden Eagles were able to get pressure on the Ithaca quarterbacks as well, as Szymanski, Nathaniel Keith III, and John Demy all registered sacks.

Brockport will play their first Empire 8 opponent next week, as they travel to St. John Fisher for the annual Courage Bowl game, with kickoff slated for 6 p.m.
