’Wick Football Pitches 45-0 Shutout at Alfred State to Earn First Win of 2017

            ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick overwhelmed host Alfred State by a final score of 45-0 on Saturday. The Hawks' offense gained 567 yards on the day while the defense limited the Pioneers to just 77 offensive yards, -18 yards rushing on 21 attempts, and three first downs. Hartwick is now 1-1 on the season while Alfred State slips to 0-2.

            The Hawks' shutout win is its first since the 2002 season. Hartwick defeated Union in that game by a 42-0 final.

            Senior running back Tito Pichardo (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) ran for 128 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. Senior quarterback Billy Pine (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls) completed 13 of his 21 attempts for 247 yards and four touchdowns. All four touchdown passes were thrown to senior receiver Brad Garcia (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley HS). Four of Garcia's six receptions on the day were for scores. He finished with 129 receiving.

            Senior receiver Koree Reed (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville) made three catches for 93 yards for the Hawks. Shane Black (Liberty, NY/Liberty) added three receptions for 62 yards.

            The Hartwick defense got the visitors the lead near the midway point of the first quarter. Mark Hackett (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls) would turn the first of two picks on the day into a 13-yard touchdown to put the Hawks ahead.

            Four minutes later, a Pine to Garcia 23-yard touchdown pass would mark the first of four straight scoring connections from the duo. Three more would come in the second quarter for 37, 20, and 15 yards, respectively, and Hartwick led 35-0 at the break.

            Pichardo scored on a three-yard scamper with 6:42 left in the third quarter. Brian McGovern (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley), who finished perfect on the day with six extra points and a field goal, connected on a 25-yarder 4:49 into the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.

            Ronald Ballard (Deposit, NY/Deposit) ran the ball 16 times for 67 yards for Hartwick. Mark Henry (Vernon, CT/Rockville) contributed 47 yards on five carries.

            Joe Tecklenburg (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) led all Hawks with six tackles. He was in on two of 'Wick's five sacks on the day. Hackett, Eugene Allen (Laurel, NY/Mattituck), and Anthony Rotunno (Hawthorne, NY/Westlake) each added five hits. Hackett and Nick Richard (Greenwich, NY/Schuylerville) combined for four of the Hawks' 11 tackles for loss in the contest.

            Hartwick opens up Empire 8 Conference play next Saturday at Cortland. The Hawks and Red Dragons get things started at 1 p.m. Cortland has edge 'Wick by three points in each of the last two seasons.
