SCHENECTADY, NY -- Senior running back Connor Kinzelmann rushed for 136 yards to lead host Union College to a 28-13 non-league football victory over the United States Coast Guard Academy in the home opener at Frank Bailey Field Saturday. Both teams are now 1-1 on the young season.

Quarterback Nick Cascione tossed two touchdowns and was 18 for 25 for 166 yards. He also ran for 22 yards and a touchdown. Alex Kaplanovich had six receptions for 66 yards and a touchdown and Griffin Beal caught a 43 yard strike and had three catches for 50 yards. Kinzelmann also had two kickoff returns for 52 yards. Defensively, Union held the Bears to -4 yards rushing, while racking up 189 yards rushing. Union had 355 total yards in offense. Jake Lombardo had a game high 13 tackles and Vincent DiCaterino recorded three sacks for 32 yards in losses.

Coast Guard was led by quarterback Ethan Goldcamp, who passed for 332 yards (his second career 300 yard game) and two touchdowns but was sacked four times by the Union defense (three by DiCaterino). Justin Moffatt had game bests of 91 yards on nine receptions and a touchdown and Chip Crowley caught 83 yards. Jake Behne had nine stops and Ryan Robertson made eight tackles for the visitors.

Union opened the scoring 4:57 into the game when Griffin Beal, a former quarterback, caught a 43 yard touchdown pass from Cascione. It capped the opening drive for the Dutchmen with nine plays for 87 yards in that time span. The first play after the opening kickoff was an 87 yard TD run by Kinzelmann but it was called back due to a penalty. But during the ensuing nine play drive, Cascione was completed all four passes for 73 yards.

After the kickoff Coast Guard had a no gain on the first play from the CG 23. Jack Reilly then intercepted a pass at the Bears' 27 and ran it in for the touchdown with 9:07 left in the first quarter. It was his third career interception return for a touchdown. Goldcamp found Bain for an eight yard touchdown pass with 4:48 remaining in the first, to wrap up a seven play, 14 yard drive that took 4:12.

Union regained a two TD lead with four minutes remaining in the second quarter. Kaplanovich had a four yard catch from Cascione to wrap up a five play, 74 yard drive in 1:49 that made it 21-7. On a third-and-three, Kinzelmann broke loose for a 65 yard run and he was caught two yards from the endzone by Behne and Nate Harvey.

Taking over at their own 32 with 18 seconds off the third quarter clock, Union marched 18 plays and 68 yards in the next 8:37 for a 28-7 lead. Cascione rushed in from six yards out. Union converted two fourth down plays on the drive and finished three-for-three on fourth down conversions.

Justin Moffatt's eight yard catch from Goldcamp with 51 seconds left in the game made it 28-13, and the kick failed. It was a 10 play, 86 yard drive that consumed 2:12.

Union is on the road for three straight non-league games beginning next week at Gallaudet. Union returns home October 7 to open Liberty League play vs. St. Lawrence at 1 p.m. at Bailey Field.
