Red Zone is Key as R-MC Football Downs DC 41-6

ASHLAND, Va. - The Randolph-Macon football team went 6 for 6 in Red Zone scoring chances and the Yellow Jacket defense held Dickinson to a pair of field goals in five trips to the Red Zone in a 41-6 opening-day victory at Day Field.

R-MC outgained the Red Devils by just 29 yards (364-335), but put up five touchdowns along with two field goals.

The Yellow Jackets took the opening kickoff and drove 60 yards in 11 plays for the game's first score, a three-yard touchdown run by junior Tre Frederick(Angier, N.C./West Johnston) as R-MC took a 7-0 lead.

DC also had an impressive first drive, moving 61 yards on 16 plays to the R-MC 9. A missed field goal kept it a 7-0 game.

R-MC took 14 plays to go 73 yards to the DC 7 on its second possession, where freshman Chris Vidal (Wake, N.C./Wake Forest) nailed a 24-yard field goal to give the home team a 10-0 lead with 11:37 left in the first half.

After the Yellow Jacket defense forced a three-and-out, a shanked punt went out of bounds at the DC 32. Sophomore Burke Estes (Wilmington, N.C./New Hanover) hit junior Sean McDonald with a four-yard TD pass as the lead grew to 17-0 with 9:19 left in the period.

The Devils drove to the R-MC 10, but settled for a 26-yard field goal to make it a 17-3 contest at halftime. DC held a 183-179 advantage in total yards in the first half.

The R-MC defense forced a three-and-out to start the third quarter. The Yellow Jackets drove to the DC 18, where Vidal booted a 35-yard field goal to push the advantage to 20-3.

Following a strong kickoff return, the Devils pushed to the R-MC 19 before a 36-yard field goal narrowed the gap to 20-6.

The Yellow Jackets used nine plays to go 72 yards on their next possession, as senior JP Redmond (Midlothian, Va./Monacan) scored from three-yards out to give R-MC a 27-6 lead late in the third quarter.

After sophomore Brian Sullivan (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) forced a fumble and sophomore Tavian Anderson (Richmond, Va./Hermitage) recovered on the DC 30, Frederick found pay dirt from 21 yards out to give R-MC a 34-6 advantage. Sophomore Billy Mullen (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove) forced and recovered a fumble on the DC 20. Sophomore Marcus Bazala (Richmond, Va./Hanover) scored on the next carry from 20 yards out as the Yellow Jackets went up 41-6 near the midway point of the final period.

Estes completed 17 of 22 passes for 191 yards and one touchdown. Hoy and junior Christian Redman (North Chesterfield, Va./James River) both had five receptions. Frederick gained 97 yards on 17 carries with a pair of touchdowns.

Sophomore Calvin Whitehead (Richmond, Va./Hermitage) paced the R-MC defense with 12 tackles, including seven solo stops and one tackle for loss. Senior Jake Pinkston (Alexandria, Va./Robinson), sophomore De'Angelo Barr (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) and Sullivan each notched 10 tackles. Sullivan had 2.5 tackles for loss, assisted on a quarterback sack and forced a fumble.

Randolph-Macon returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 9, traveling to Averett for a 6 p.m. contest.
