2016 Manchester team awards announced

A quartet consisting of seniors Matt Wirick (Granger, Ind.), Nathan Birk (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Andrew Coe (Roanoke, Ind.) and junior Jack Kay (Williamsport, Ind.) topped the list of 2016 team honors handed out by head coach Nate Jensen and his staff at the annual football end-of-the-year banquet Sunday, Dec. 4.

Wirick, who was an honorable mention selection as a wide receiver and earned second team honors as a special teams' athlete from the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, was tabbed the squad's Offensive Player of the Year. He hauled in 33 receptions for 470 yards and four touchdowns in his receiving role and a registered better than 1,000 yards in kickoff and punt returns. Coe, an honorable mention all-HCAC awardee, was the Special Teams Player of the Year after averaging 38.7 yards per punt and 43.2 yards per kickoff as well as hitting on four of five field goal attempts and 23 of 27 extra point tries. Kay, a linebacker, received Defensive MVP, as the second team all-league selection was the loop and team leader in tackles per game (9.7), while Birk, also a linebacker, the program's 2016 nominee for the American Football Coaches Association's Good Works Team, was named the overall team MVP after ranking second on the defensive unit in tackles per game (8.5), good for fifth in the conference, as well as recording two interceptions and recovering a pair of opponent fumbles which led him to his second all-HCAC recognition.

Other awards given out at the Ceruti Banquet Center in Fort Wayne went to freshman quarterback Harrison Price (Auburn, Ind.) (Gold Squad Most Outstanding); senior tight end Brandon Webb (Fort Wayne, Ind.) (Offensive Skill Most Outstanding); senior offensive lineman Eric Wietholter (Zionsville, Ind.) (Offensive Line Most Outstanding); senior defensive lineman Dan Heim (Goshen, Ind.) (Defensive Line Most Outstanding); and sophomore defensive back Dillon Nelson (Fairland, Ind.) (Defensive Skill Most Outstanding).
