Scots erase 23-point deficit, win 41-33 at Trine

Angola, Ind. - The Alma College football team erased a 23-point deficit and scored the go-ahead touchdown with 42 seconds left in regulation to defeat Trine, 41-33, on Saturday (Nov. 5) at Zollner Athletic Stadium. The Scots (6-3 overall, 3-2 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association) won for the first time at Trine since the 2006 campaign and also reached the six-win mark for the first time since 2006.

Senior Grant Wilson (Redford Township, Mich./Lee Thurston) racked up a career-high 108 yards on the ground in the win, while freshman Caleb Reinhart (Montrose, Mich./Montrose) added a career-hest 101 yards as the Scots posted 249 yards rushing. Junior Dylan Zaborowski (Jackson, Mich./Michigan Center) completed 12 of his 25 passes for 208 yards and three touchdowns, while junior Lars Murray (Coleman, Mich./Coleman) caught five passes for a career-high 119 yards and a touchdown.

Trine took a 23-0 lead with 8:07 left in the second quarter before the Alma offense got rolling, outscoring the Thunder 41-10 for the remainder of the game, including 21-10 in the final 15 minutes.

Junior Danny Hugan II (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) got Alma on the board mid-way through the second stanza after he caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Zaborowski, then after the Scots recovered a fumble on the their own 47-yard line, sophomore Essa Kellah (Grand Rapids, Mich./Godwin Heights) found the end zone on an eight-yard pass from Zaborowski to make the score 23-13 at the half.

In the third quarter, Zaborowski pulled Alma within three points on a 10-yard scamper to the end zone. The Thunder missed a field goal on the ensuing drive, and then scored after intercepting Zaborowski to take a 30-20 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Reinhart pulled Alma back within three points on a career-long 56-yard touchdown run, but the Thunder responded with a field goal to take a six-point advantage at 33-27 with just over six minutes to play.

Zaborowski took the ball on the ensuing possession and engineered a 15-play, 82-yard drive, culminating with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Murray with 42 seconds left. The Scots sealed the victory three plays later when sophomore Chris Luckhurst (Ovid, Mich./Ovid-Elsie) picked off a pass by Brandon Rooze for his first career interception and returned it 75 yards for the score and.

Junior Colton Tyson (Vassar, Mich./Vassar) led Alma with 17 tackles for the second straight week, including a career-high 3.5 tackles for loss. Senior Cody Coleman (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) added a career-best 10 stops.

Alma will return to Bahlke Field on Saturday, Nov. 12, to host Adrian College in the regular-season finale for the Scots. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m., with the seniors of the football program being honored prior to the game.
