Hamline Reaches Five Wins For First Time Since 1997

More news about: Hamline

For the first time in 19 years, Hamline will finish a football season at .500 or better. The MIAC's top passer, soph Justice Spriggs, threw for five scores and 317 yards and the Pipers brought The Hammer back to campus with a solid 35-13 win over Augsburg at soggy Klas Field Saturday.

The HU defense held the Auggies to -11 yards rushing while the offense broke a tight game open with three second quarter scores and two more in the third quarter.

Spriggs and his fellow St. Anthony alum WR Nick Kampa were in sync all day. The latter caught seven passes for 124 yards and three touchdowns and also had a two point conversion to help the Pipers to a 5-3 overall mark, 3-3 in the MIAC.

The Pipers trailed 6-0 in the second quarter when Spriggs connected with Kampa for a 37 yard strike. The extra point was blocked to keep the game at 6. But HU untied the game for good three minutes later when Spriggs found Josiah Harris for a 56-yard score -- the longest offensive play of the season. Spriggs and Kampa combined again on a 35 yarder to make it 21-6 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Deon Bishop made a spectacular catch in the corner of the end zone for a score and the Spriggs-Kampa connection hit one more time for a final score.

In the process, the sophomore signal caller passed Tom Hauge for the single season school mark for passing yardage. Spriggs has now thrown for 2261 yards, besting Hauge's 1991 mark of 2146 yards. He is just seven shy of Tim Bona's completion mark of 193 for a season that was set in 2014.

On defense, the Pipers had nine tackles for loss. Mitchell Maday, who leads the MIAC in sacks, had two. HU also had a pair of interceptions and five pass breakups.

Hamline now heads on the road on Saturday, November 5 to Collegeville to face St. John's (7-1, 5-1). They finish the season on Saturday, November 12 at Klas against Bethel. Both games start at 1:00 p.m.
