More news about: Brockport

ALFRED, N.Y. – The College at Brockport football team went toe-to-toe with nationally ranked Alfred University on Saturday afternoon, but a late touchdown by the Saxons put an end to Brockport's three-game winning streak as they fell 30-28.

The Golden Eagles drop to 5-3 on the season and 4-2 in conference play.  The Saxons, who were ranked No. 15 in this week's D3football.com Top 25, remain unbeaten at 8-0 overall and 6-0 in the Empire 8.

The Saxons scored on their opening drive of the game but the Golden Eagles responded with a touchdown of their own.  Two Alfred penalties combined for 20-yards, putting Brockport in Golden Eagle territory.  Joe Germinerio connected with Nick Gomez for a gain of 12-yards, then Joseph Ortiz for a gain of 11 to break into the red zone.  Dan Andrews took it from there, tabbing two carries for six-yards and 13-yards for his first score of the game.  Brett Renzi converted the extra point attempt to knot the game at seven with 6:17 remaining in the first frame.

Brockport's defense forced a turnover on downs on Alfred's ensuing drive.  The Saxons went for it on fourth-and-eleven, and Adonis Carrasco broke up a pass to give Brockport the ball back.

The Saxons regained possession after a missed snap on the punt attempt, taking over at the Brockport 27-yard line.  They wasted no time, scoring in just over a minute to take a 14-7 lead with 10:11 on the clock.

Germinerio found Ian Gilhousen for a 13-yard gain to start off Brockport's following drive.  Three plays later, Gilhousen caught a pass for 8-yards and a personal foul on the Saxons made it a 23-yard gain.  Andrews tabbed the next three carries of the drive, rushing for 28-yards and finding the end zone with an 8-yard run.  Renzi's kick attempt was good to tie the game at 14.

The Golden Eagles defense came up big again, forcing a Saxon three-and-out, and allowing Brockport to take over with 4:49 remaining till the break.

Kory Wyatt caught a pass for 26-yards to move the Golden Eagles to their own 47-yard line.  Facing and first-and-ten from Alfred's 13-yard line, Germinerio ran it in himself for his first tally of the game.  Renzi's kick was good to give Brockport a 21-14 lead with 40 seconds left till the half.

Alfred kicked a field goal with 0.50 left on the clock to cut Brockport's lead to 21-17 at the half.

Brockport was forced to punt on their opening drive of the second half, and a 39-yard kick from Eric Yaeger put Alfred at their own three-yard line.  Facing third and nine, Jake O'Connell intercepted a pass, giving Brockport possession at Alfred's 23-yard line.

Germinerio gained six yards on two carries to burst into the Alfred red zone.  Andrews took it from there with a 17-yard rushing touchdown.  Renzi's extra point attempt was through the uprights, giving Brockport a 28-17 lead at 6:30 in the third quarter.

The Saxon's were quick to respond with two a run for 56-yards and a 45-yard completion, cutting Brockport's lead to 28-24 entering the final frame.

A back-and-forth final quarter was scoreless until less than three minutes remaining.  The Saxons scored on a 19-yard pass, but the extra point attempt was ride right, holding their lead to two.  Adonis Carrasco returned the kick off 27-yards to put Brockport at their own 35-yard line with 2:04 remaining.  Back-to-back sacks and an interception would seal the win for the Saxons.

Germinerio finished 19-for-26 with 167-yards and one touchdown, while rushing for 26-yards and one score.  Andrews tabbed 24 carries for 129-yards and three scores.  Joseph Ortiz less Brockport receivers with 65-yards off of eight catches.

Carrasco led the defense with eight tackles, including 3.5 for loss, and one sack.  James Rupp and Matt Szymanski each tabbed six.

The Golden Eagles will remain on the road next weekend as they head to Morrisville State College to take on the Mustangs at 1 pm.
