FOREST GROVE, Ore. – The Lewis & Clark Pioneers hit the road on Saturday to take on the Pacific University Boxers at Hanson Stadium. Both teams entered the match looking for their first Northwest Conference win, but the Boxers came out victorious, winning 55-0.
Sophomore Mike Machado started his first game of the season at quarterback and ended the first half with a 50 percent completion rate and 69 passing yards.
Michael Kytlica ended the first half leading the Pioneers with seven rushes for a gain of 19 yards. Dallas Garreaud, who had two receptions for a total of 23 yards, led the receivers. However, the offense was unable to convert more than a third of their third downs, keeping them scoreless in the first half.
The Pioneers (0-5; 0-3 NWC) started the second half with a 34-point deficit and were unable to hold off the Boxers offense that added to the margin with another touchdown in the first 13 seconds of the half. Brandon Boyd had a 66-yard rush into the end zone on the first play of the half with an extra point by Alex Beekman.
Gage Bumgardner recovered a fumble by Campbell Summerfield one minute into the fourth quarter, giving the Pioneers the ball on the Pacific 42-yard line. Niko Fortino, starting the second half at quarterback, rushed for 16 yards during the drive, before the Pioneers were unable to convert the only fourth down attempt of the game. Fortino finished the game 6 of 16 for 74 yards, with one interception. Freshman Caden Voges made his first career appearance to finish the game for the Pioneers. With this loss, the Pioneers have extended their losing streak to a school-record 28 games.
Remington Campbell led the Lewis & Clark defense with six solo tackles and one assisted tackle, while James Tostado contributed five solo tackles and three assisted tackles. The Pioneers defense finished with three sacks, one each from Andrew Werst, Thor Retzlaff and Blake Garrison.
"I think we need to work doing total release, is what Coach Locey always talks about," said Garreaud, a sophomore, "We need to be leaving everything on the field for all four quarters."
Garreaud led the team in receiving yards, finishing with five receptions for 66 yards. Dejour Williams finished with three receptions and 31 yards. Rezlaff ended the game with ten punts for a total of 335 yards, with a game-high 53-yard punt in the first quarter.
Lewis & Clark is on the road again next week, taking on Puget Sound on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Baker Stadium in Tacoma.
