Savant Makes History in Muhlenberg Football Win

More news about: Muhlenberg

Nick Savant scored three touchdowns and became the first player in team history to gain 100 yards rushing and receiving in the same game as the Muhlenberg football team breezed to a 43-7 home win against Gettysburg.

Savant rushed 28 times for 114 yards – his fifth straight 100-yard game – and a 4-yard touchdown and caught seven passes for 145 with a pair of 42-yard scoring receptions.
Nick Palladino completed 21 of 32 passes for 258 yards and three touchdowns. He also caught a touchdown pass, the first of his career.
The Mules (5-1, 4-1) held the Bullets (2-4, 2-3), who came in averaging 35.4 points and 466.6 yards per game, to 234 total yards and forced five turnovers. Luke Wiley picked off a pair of passes for Muhlenberg, and John Feaster intercepted a pass in the end zone.
Gettysburg won the opening toss and elected to receive, but Ryan Thompson fumbled on the kickoff return at Nate Corvil recovered for the Mules. Although the drive ended in a missed field goal, the defense forced a three-and-out and started its next drive in Bullet territory following a short punt.
Eight plays later, Savant ran up the middle for his sixth rushing touchdown of the season. A failed two-point conversion left the score at 6-0.
Muhlenberg took possession at its own 10 late in the first quarter and embarked on a 16-play, 71-yard drive that culminated with Todd Spirt hitting a 37-yard field goal, his first of three in the game.
A 35-yard scramble by quarterback Justin Davidov to the 1-yard line set up the Bullets with a good chance to score on the ensuing drive, but on third-and-goal from the seven, Feaster outjumped a Gettysburg receiver in the end zone for his 13th career interception.
The Mules needed nine plays to turn the turnover into points, as Savant took a screen pass from Palladino and took it 42 yards to the end zone, extending the lead to 16-0 with 6:46 left in the half.
Just 65 seconds later, it was 23-0. Wiley picked off a pass on Gettysburg's third play after the kickoff and returned it to the 22-yard line. Palladino hit a wide-open Ryan Delaney in the end zone on the next play.
Muhlenberg used a trick play to score again with 23.2 seconds on the clock. On second-and-goal from the Gettysburg 5, Savant took a direct snap and flipped the ball to wide receiver Sean Robbins, who hit an open Palladino in the corner of the end zone. It was the first time a non-quarterback threw a touchdown pass for the Mules since 2007.
Savant's second 42-yard touchdown reception, on the first play after a deflected punt, and two Spirt field goals made it 43-0 in the third quarter.
Gettysburg spoiled the shutout bid on a 36-yard touchdown pass from Danny Thompson to Ty Abdul-Karim on its first drive of the fourth quarter.
