Frostburg Runs To Fourth-Straight Win

More news about: Frostburg State

EWING, N.J. – Frostburg racked up over 400 yards in offense for the second-straight week and the Bobcats ran to a 34-7 victory over the College of the New Jersey, Saturday, in NJAC action.

A week ago, the Bobcats passed for a season high in yardage and this week they did it on the ground. Frostburg ran for 259 yards, the most since 2013, and collected its fourth-consecutive win in the process. FSU sits at 5-1 overall and remains in a five-way tie for first place in the NJAC at 4-1.

Freshman running back Jamaal Morant was the power behind the run game on Saturday as he rushed for 188 yards on 17 carries and one score. He averaged 11.1 yards per run and tied a school record with a 93-yard run in the third quarter from the Bobcat five to the TCNJ 2.

Morant scored the game's first touchdown late in the first from five yards out to give the Bobcats a 7-0 cushion.

Sophomore quarterback Connor Cox tied a career-high three touchdown passes as he helped Frostburg build a 21-0 lead late in the first half. Cox found sophomore tight end Christian Dipaola for a 19-yard touchdown early in the fourth and Cox later connected with junior wideout Russell Neverdon for a 40-yard score with 5:40 showing in the second.

Neverdon's TD reception capped Frostburg's longest scoring drive of the afternoon as it needed just four plays to cover 80 yards for the score. On the third play from scrimmage, Morant ran for 31 yards to the TCNJ 40.

Senior kicker Isaac Robinson also got in on the scoring action. He booted a 31-yard field goal with 3:27 left in the second quarter for a 24-0 halftime lead and opened the second half with a 36-yard field goal early in the third for a 27-0 advantage.

The Lions (0-6, 0-5 NJAC) got on the board early in the fourth quarter when Trevor Osler tossed a four-yard TD to Jeff Mattonelli that cut the hosts deficit to 27-7.

The Cox-to-Neverdon connection answered TCNJ's score with a 13-yard pitch-and-catch that put Frostburg ahead 34-7.

Frostburg finished with 441 yards of offense on 57 plays. Cox threw for all 182 yards on 12-of-23 completions with three TDs. Neverdon grabbed two passes for 53 yards and scored on both receptions. Morant also caught one pass for eight yards and finished with 196 all-purpose yards.

The Bobcats again put up some impressive numbers on defense as they picked off two passes, recovered two TCNJ fumbles and held the Lions twice on fourth down. The defense also forced four punts and a missed field goal in the third quarter.

The Lions finished with 254 yards in offense, while 80 of those yards came on their only scoring drive of the ballgame.

Senior William Sewell led Frostburg with nine tackles, including a season-high 4.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble. He entered the weekend ranked 16th in the nation in tackles for loss per game (2.1). Freshman Monte Jones and junior Josh Scales finished second on the team with six tackles each.

Frostburg hosts Christopher Newport next Saturday on Homecoming at 1:00 pm.
