Blue Devils hand game over to UW-La Crosse

MENOMONIE (October 8, 2016) - What looked like a promising start for UW-Stout, turned into a rout as the Blue Devils lost 42-6 to UW-La Crosse in Stout's annual homecoming game Saturday at Don and Nona Williams Stadium.

The Blue Devils (2-3, 0-2 WIAC) stopped UW-La Crosse on 3-and-outs on the Eagles (5-0, 2-0 WIAC) first two drives and turned their first two possessions into points. Drew Pearson converted two field goals, a 42-yarder at 12:34 and a 33-yarder at 7:55 to give Stout a 6-0 lead.

The Eagles countered with an 11-play, 75-yard drive, capped off by Tyler Jenkins' 7-yard TD score and the Eagles led 7-6 at 3:47 of the first quarter. The Eagles stopped Stout on a 3-and-out, then handed the ball back to the Blue Devils when LaRon Thompson stepped in front of a Tarek Yaeggi pass.

The ills then began for the Blue Devils on the next drive. When quarterback Jay Alston was sacked, he fumbled the ball, which would be the first of four fumbles lost by Stout on the day.

La Crosse would score three times in the second period - on a Jenkins 1-yard plunge, an 84-yard TD reception by Dante Marski from Yaeggi and 5-yard run by Yaeggi just before haltime and La Crosse took a commanding 28-6 lead into the locker room.

The Eagles tacked on a score in the third on a nine-play, 73-yard drive, when Jenkins scored his third TD of the afternoon. La Crosse closed out the scoring early in the fourth quarter on a 14 yard pass from Yaeggi to Joel Oxton.

The Eagles piled up 410 total yards of offense, 313 through the air and 97 on the ground. Yaeggi completed 24-of-34 passes for 301 yards with two TDs and ran for another. Wide receiver Ryan Kruser compled one pass for 12 yards. Oxton hauled in six passes for 93 yards and Marski had three catches for 104 yards, highlighted by hsi 84 yard score. Jenkins was the game's leading rusher with 63 yards on 21 carries, but he reached paydirt three times.

Stout recorded 245 yards of total offense, 189 in the air, 56 on the ground. Alston was 13-of-24 for 153 yards, while Danny Farley was 2-for-11 for 23 yards and an interception. Tight end Ben Hall completed a pass for 13 yards. Adolfo Pacheco rushed seven times for 39 yards.

Offensively, the Blue Devils couldn't finish drives, converting only 1-of-14 third down attempts. Defensively, the Blue Devils couldn't get off the field, allowing the Eagles to convert 12-of-20 third down chances.
