Hope Football Downs Alma Behind 231 Brandan Campbell Rushing Yards

Brandan Campbell chewed up yardage like only a few Hope College running backs er have on a football field.

The junior from Otsego, Michigan (Otsego HS) paved the way for the Flying Dutchmen's 35-19 win at Alma College on Saturday by rushing for a career-high 231 yards and five touchdowns on 29 carries. He totaled the 10th-most rushing yards in a single game by a Hope player.

The Flying Dutchmen (2-3 overall) evened their Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association record at 1-1.

Campbell came within one of the school record for touchdowns in a game shared by Brandon Graham (1996 vs. Kalamazoo) and David Booko (2006 vs. Alma).

Campbell helped Hope overcome a 13-0 first-quarter deficit set up by two Flying Dutchmen turnovers that resulted in short scoring drives.

Campbell scored on a 46-yard touchdown run to end a 6-play, 78-yard drive with 59 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Campbell's 48-yard scoring jaunt and the second of five PATs from junior Darren Ford of Howell, Michigan (Howell) put Hope on top 14-13 two minutes into the third quarter.

Campbell tacked on touchdown runs of 7 yards and 1 yard before the third quarter ended for a 28-13 halftime lead.

Campbell capped his day with a 13-yard touchdown run with 1:48 remaining in the fourth quarter against the Scots (3-2, 1-1 MIAA).

Hope finished with 276 yards rushing and 162 passing to outgain Alma 402-320 in total yardage.

Senior linebacker Aaron O'Meara of Wyandotte, Michigan (Roosevelt) totaled a game-high 20 tackles, including five solos.

Senior defensive back Andy Lucas of McBain, Michigan (McBain) and junior linebacker Griffin Weigl of Saginaw, Michigan (Nouvel Catholic) made 12 tackles apiece.

Hope returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 15 with a 6 p.m. game at Adrian (3-2, 1-0 MIAA).
