Lakeland jumps past Albion

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Richard Micheaux hauled in a 13-yard touchdown pass with seven seconds left to lift Lakeland University to a 40-38 victory over Albion College in non-league football action.

Albion led 38-28 on a 1-yard touchdown plunge by quarterback Chad Hamilton with 6:10 to play.

Lakeland countered with an 8-play, 96-yard scoring drive in less than two minutes. Eldrada Meeks was on the receiving end of a 9-yard touchdown pass to cut the Briton lead to 38-34 with four minutes to play.

Albion picked up two first downs, but it was unable to run out the clock. Lakeland took over at its 14 with 31 seconds left after Sam Blanzy's 37-yard punt. Michael Whitley completed two passes to Kezlow Smith for 73 yards to move the Muskies into the red zone for the game-winning score.

Albion racked up 528 yards of offense. Quarterback Chad Hamilton threw for 304 yards and three touchdowns. Connor Carbary hauled in six passes for 96 yards and a touchdown. Marlon Martin and Tyler Sykes also caught touchdown passes.

Brendan Zuver turned in his first career 100-yard game, rushing for 105 yards for an 8.1-yard average.

Defensively, Anthony Waite returned an interception 31 yards for a score that boosted the Albion lead to 10-0 in the first quarter. Waite and Jose Rodriguez finished with nine tackles apiece. Rodriguez wrapped up two tackles for a loss of 20 yards.

Andrew Fabry kicked a 37-yard field goal as Albion scored on its first possession of the day.

Albion will start preparations for its Oct. 1 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener against Adrian College.
