Frostburg Surges Past Southern Virginia 24-7

More news about: Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md. – Junior tailback Jordan Brown ran for two touchdowns and Frostburg built a 24-0 lead en route to a 24-7 victory over Southern Virginia, Saturday night.

Brown scored the Bobcats' first and third touchdowns of the evening as they improved to 2-1 overall and evened their NJAC record to 1-1.

Frostburg totaled just 191 yards in offense, but capitalized on three SVU (1-1, 0-1) turnovers.

Brown's first score was a six-yard run that capped a three-play, 21-yard drive for the Bobcats. The Knights fumbled the ball away on their first possession of the game that led to Brown's TD.

Frostburg's next five points came in the final 2:04 of the second quarter. SVU intercepted a pass at its own two-yard line, but managed just five offensive yards and was forced to punt. However, the snap was low and went out of the back of the end zone for a safety for Frostburg.

On its ensuing possession, Frostburg moved into SVU territory and down to the 27 where senior Isaac Robinson booted a 44-yard field goal as time expired for a 12-0 Bobcat lead at intermission.

In the third, the Bobcat defense held Southern Virginia to minus 11 yards on four plays on its first drive of the second half. On fourth down, junior Shawn Magginson tackled Cooper Clark for a seven-yard loss on the punt attempt after another low snap.

The Bobcats took over at the four and three plays later, sophomore Connor Cox scored from 12 yards out as Frostburg pushed its lead to 18-0.

The Bobcats forced another turnover from the Knights on their next possession as junior Josh Washington jumped for a pass from Ty Jones and came down with the interception at the SVU 36.

Following the interception, Brown carried the ball three-straight times on Frostburg's final scoring drive of the game. Cox found junior Joe Beckford for 21 yards down to the Knight four and Brown scored on the next play as Frostburg led 24-0.

Southern Virginia's lone touchdown came with 6:12 left in the fourth. A fumbled punt return gave the Knights the ball at the Frostburg 28 with 11:33 to play in the game. Five minutes later, Jones rushed for a two-yard touchdown that cut FSU's lead to 24-7.

For the second time in three games, the Frostburg defense faced an option offense and the Bobcats limited the Knights to just 161 yards of offense, all on the ground.

The Bobcats recovered two fumbles, picked off a pass and allowed the Knights just 2-of-14 third-down conversions. FSU held Southern Virginia to 20 or fewer yards on 8-of-12 drives and held them to negative yards on four-consecutive drives spanning the second and third quarters.

Senior William Sewell led the defensive effort with 12 tackles, including 3.0 behind the line of scrimmage. Junior Niles Scott added nine stops and 1.5 TFLs, while junior Dre'Quan Reed added nine tackles.

Brown finished with 78 yards rushing on 20 carries and two scores. Cox finished with 86 yards through the air on 7-of-15 completions. He found junior Austin Bonsall twice for 31 yards.

Frostburg has a bye next week and will travel to Kean on Oct. 1 at 1:00 pm.
