Boxers' Football Loses Season Opener to Adrian, 30-28

A see-saw affair between Pacific and Adrian to start the 2016 football saw the visiting Bulldogs come away with a 30-28 win over the host Boxers at Hanson Stadium on Friday night.

 

The Boxers (0-1) rallied from an early 13-0 deficit to score the next 21 points, culminating with a 75-yard touchdown run by senior Kamana Pimental (Kaneohe, Hawaii) on the second play from scrimmage in the second half.

 

The Bulldogs (1-0) scored the first 13 points of the game for the early lead. Adrian got on the scoreboard on its second drive of the young season. After a short punt by the Boxers, the Bulldogs started the drive on the Pacific 37. Four plays and 37 yards later, Bulldogs' quarterback Stephen Milarch found Randy Fry for a 26-yard touchdown pass for an early 7-0 lead. Milarch finished the contest with 211 yards and 3 touchdowns, completing 15 of 26 passes.

 

Pacific got on the scoreboard when senior quarterback Campbell Summerfield (Sandy, Oregon) completed threw a 46-yard touchdown pass to Kobe Williams (Las Vegas, Nevada) to cut the Bulldogs' lead to 13-7. The touchdown pass by Summerfield was the culmination of four-straight completions for the first-time starter, who finished his debut 21 of 36 for 284 yards and three touchdowns.

 

Next, the Boxers' defense forced a three and out and the offense came back with an eight play, 59-yard drive that ended with Summerfield finding junior Chad Aragon (Honolulu, Hawaii) for a 14-yard touchdown that put Pacific ahead 14-13 with 4:10 to play in the opening half.

 

The momentum stayed with the Boxers at the start of the second half when Pimental broke loose for a 75-yard touchdown run that put Pacific ahead 21-13 in the early seconds of the third quarter.

 

The Bulldogs answered with a field goal and touchdown, respectively on its next two drives to regain the lead for a 23-21 with 6:06 left to play in the third quarter. Later in the quarter, Adrian added to its lead when Milarch threw his third touchdown pass of the night for a 30-21 lead.

 

The resilient Boxers hungry for a season-opening win went 99 yards on 10 plays in the final seconds of the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 30-28. The drive saw Summerfield complete seven passes to three-different receivers including Tyler Nakama (Honolulu, Hawaii), who found the end zone on a 19-yard reception to cut the deficit to 30-28 with 20 seconds to play.

 

The Bulldogs ended the comeback hopes, recovering the onside kick attempt by the Boxers to end the game.

 

Next, Pacific will host the University of Dubuque in a non-conference tilt on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. at Hanson Stadium.
