THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Football team improved to 4-5 on the season with a 42-16 victory over the Mount Ida Mustangs on Saturday afternoon on Reinhart Field.

Maritime got six touchdowns on the day with four coming on the ground, junior Brett McKinney (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free Academy) led the team with 138 yards rushing while scoring a pair of touchdowns. Junior Krystian Cardinal-Charles (Brooklyn, N.Y./Boys and Girls) also had a 50-yard touchdown run, while sophomore Devin Kenny (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) recorded a touchdown late in the game.

The passing game had three completions, with two of those catches going for scoring plays. Junior Nick Fischetti (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) picked up another passing touchdown as he found sophomore Matt Ward (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) for a 68-yard score, while senior quarterback Zack Chilcott (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) hooked up with Fischetti for another touchdown score. The touchdown pass was the 10th of Chilcott's career, to set a new program record for touchdown passes in a playing career.

On defense, Maritime was led by senior Kameron Knight (Clayton, N.C./West Johnson) with 11 stops on the afternoon; he also recorded one sack, picked up a fumble, and was responsible for two pass breakups. Sophomore Nick Conte (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) had a big day in the secondary, as the safety recorded seven tackles on the day. Senior Beau Warrington (Milford, Del./Sussex Technical) had six stops, while classmate Michael Brunk (Hidden Valley Lake, Calif./Glenwood Springs (Colo.)) had three tackles, with two sacks for a loss in 15 yards, and also forced a fumble.

Special teams saw junior John Arny (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen) punt the ball five times for an average of 41.8 yards, while sophomore Matthew Murphy (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) amassed 356 yards on six kickoffs and also had four touchbacks. Senior Diogo Dietrich (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/DePaul Catholic (N.J.)) was perfect on his extra point attempts in the game and also recorded one kickoff for 43 yards.

On returns, junior Brian Price (New York, N.Y./Wadleigh) returned three kicks for 75 yards, while sophomore Garrett Stryzs (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) had one kickoff return for 14 yards.

"It was a great afternoon for us, and it was great for us to do it with the 2010 ECFC Championship Team in attendance," said Maritime Head Coach Clayton Kendrick-Holmes. "We'll look to finish the season off strong next week with another home game."

Maritime won the opening coin toss and deferred to the second half, the move paid off as the defense held Mount Ida to just five plays for a loss in eight yards. After punts by both Maritime and Mount Ida on their next respective drives, the Privateers regained possession with 9:07 left in the opening quarter.

Fischetti got the drive started with a run, followed by a 10-yard gain from junior Joe Modica (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip). On the drive, McKinney broke three runs of 11-yards or more as the team continued to move the ball. The final play of the drive saw McKinney dart four yards into the endzone to put Maritime ahead by a 7-0 score.

On the next series, the defense did not allow the Mustangs to score as Mount Ida set up in a 1st-and-Goal situation with play crossing into the second quarter. The defense held Mount Ida to a field goal, as the Mustangs trimmed their deficit to four.

Both teams punted on their next possessions, to give Maritime the ball back with 9:14 to go in the half. Fischetti opened the series with a four-yard run, to set up 2nd-and-6 from Maritime's 32-yard line. The call was for Fischetti to throw, as Fischetti found a wide open Ward down the right sideline for a 68-yard touchdown score. Maritime moved ahead by a 14-3 score after the Dietrich extra point.

Mount Ida scored a touchdown on its next series, but Maritime responded quickly as the team moved down the field on big carries by McKinney to set up 1st-and-10 at the Mount Ida 21-yard line. Chilcott dropped back for the pass and found Fischetti for the score.

Conte made a major impact on the next defensive series for Maritime as he blocked a punt with less than a minute to go to give the Privateers a short field with time working against them. Junior Eric Wallace (West Point, N.Y./James O'Neill) fell on the ball after Conte's block of the punt.

The closing drive of the half for Maritime saw Fischetti collect 18 yards, followed by a Chilcott rush, and a McKinney rush into the endzone for a two-yard touchdown score. Dietrich's extra point was good as the score increased to 28-10 in favor of Maritime.

As play crossed into the second half, Maritime and Mount Ida went scoreless through the period. Both teams recovered fumbles, but were unable to turn the takeaways into points.

Both teams went 3-and-out on their first respective drives in the fourth quarter, but as Maritime punted the Mustangs were able to return the ball 82 yards with a special team touchdown to make the score 28-16 with 8:47 left in the game.

Maritime responded shortly thereafter as Chilcott picked up a first down on an 11-yard carry to put the ball at midfield. The give was to Cardinal-Charles, who broke tackles on the way to the Mustang endzone on the 50-yard carry to give Maritime a three score lead once again at 35-16.

The Privateers got the ball back once again with 5:51 to go in the game, and McKinney got the drive started with a quick 14-yard carry. Chilcott picked up seven yards, followed by another 13 from McKinney. Kenny came into the game and had an 18-yard carry, as he was stopped at the eight-yard line to give the Privateers goal to go. Kenny finished off the drive on his next carry for his first career touchdown.

Maritime's defense held off the Mount Ida offense in the waning minutes as the Privateers sealed the 42-16 victory.
