Football Drops Final Road Contest of 2015 to Husson Eagles

More news about: SUNY-Maritime

BANGOR, MAINE – The Maritime Football team closed out the road portion of its 2015 schedule on Saturday afternoon at the Winkin Sports Complex in Maine. The Privateers fell to the Husson Eagles by a 40-14 score in the contest.

"The two turnovers before the half really hurt us," said Maritime Head Coach Clayton Kendrick-Holmes. "I was disappointed in their points off of our turnovers and the number of penalties we took throughout the game. We played hard but you can't beat the top team in the conference with those mistakes. Overall, we had several outstanding efforts, particularly on our defensive front. We will regroup and finish the season strong."

Leading the way for the Privateers on offense was junior Brett McKinney (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free Academy), who recorded two first-half touchdowns on a pair of runs. McKinney led the team on the afternoon with 90 yards. Classmate Nick Fischetti (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) was second on the team with 57 yards, while senior Zack Chilcott (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston), junior Joe Modica (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip), and sophomore Devin Kinney also carried the ball.

Chilcott completed three passes, with one of his completions going to sophomore Joseph Hussey (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's), for his first career catch for 21 yards.

The defensive was led by sophomore Kendal Parker (Evans, Ga./Lakeside) with 15 tackles, including one for a loss in yardage. Classmate Craig Hinrichs (Islip, N.Y./Islip) had 13 stops, with a pair adding for a loss in five yards. Senior Kameron Knight (Clayton, N.C./West Johnson) and junior Corey Palladino (Merrick, N.Y./St. Anthony's) both had 10 stops, while Knight added a fumble recovery.

Special teams saw junior Brian Price (New York, N.Y./Wadleigh) pick up 61 yards on three kickoff returns, while sophomore Garrett Stryzs (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) had three overall returns for 27 yards. Freshman Karl Riek (Sweetwater, N.J./Cedar Creek) had one return for 22 yards. Junior John Arny (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen) had four punts for a 42 yard average, while sophomore Matthew Murphy (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) averaged 59 yards on his pair of kickoffs. Senior Diogo Dietrich (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/DePaul Catholic (N.J.)) was called into action once and had one kickoff.

Maritime fell behind 6-0 in the opening quarter on Husson's second drive of the contest. On the ensuing Privateer possession, Maritime marched down the field 59 yards. McKinney, Fischetti and Chilcott rushed on the series as Maritime picked up two first downs before McKinney rushed the final five yards for the touchdown. Dietrich's extra point was good to put Maritime ahead, 7-6.

Husson scored on a drive that crossed into the second quarter and picked up a two-point conversion to gain a seven-point lead at 14-7. Neither team scored on their next respective possessions as Maritime took over the ball with 12:52 left in the half.

McKinney got the drive started with a 49-yard rush to set up  1st-and-Goal. McKinney just needed one more touch to power the ball into the endzone for his second touchdown of the afternoon to tie the game at 14.

Maritime's defense was able to turn the ball over as Knight recovered the fumble to give possession back to the Privateers. However, the Privateers gave the ball back just three plays later on a turnover as well.

Husson added two touchdowns on its last two drives of the half to take a 28-14 lead into the halftime break.  The Eagles scored two more touchdowns throughout the second half, with one extra point missing, and one being blocked by senior Beau Warrington (Milford, Del./Sussex Technical).

Maritime (3-5, 1-4 ECFC) will look forward to next weekend when the Privateers play host to the Mount Ida Mustangs at 2:00 p.m. on Reinhart Field.

Husson (6-1, 5-0 ECFC) will battle with Norwich at 1:00 p.m. in Northfield, Vt. Next Saturday afternoon.
