ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Benedictine University football team battled through soggy and muddy conditions on the road to improve to 4-0 in conference play with a 20-7 win over Rockford University.
"We played an old fashioned grind it out game in the mud," head coach Jon Cooper said. "We handled it well and it was a great team victory. Due to the conditions, neither team was effective passing. We resorted to keeping it on the ground, and our line along with Derek Miles and Joshua Williams had outstanding games. The defense came up big again this week."
The weather forced both teams to resort to an exclusive running offense. Each team threw the ball just seven times with a combined two completions. Derek Miles ran for a career high 165 yards on 29 carries with a touchdown. Ryan Sample completed just one pass, a nine-yard touchdown to Elijah Walker for the go-ahead score in the second quarter. Miles opened the scoring after a bad snap on a punt by recording an 11-yard touchdown. Sample recorded the final score to ice the game late in the fourth quarter on a one-yard dive.
The defense allowed just 112 total yards while forcing a pair of turnovers. Andrew Soulis led the defense with nine tackles.
Benedictine (6-2, 4-0 NACC) concludes the home portion of the schedule on Saturday against Aurora.
