Rowan Football Uses Second Half Comeback to Defeat Frostburg State, 15-6

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University football team scored 15 unanswered points in the second half to come from behind and defeat Frostburg State University, 15-6 on Saturday afternoon.

 

The Profs and Bobcats both have a 6-2 overall record and they are each 5-2 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.

 

Rowan running back Withler Marcelin (sr. Ocean Twp., NJ/Ocean Twp.) carried the ball 29 times for 101 yards and one touchdown. Quarterback Dante Pinckney (so. Lawnside, NJ/Haddon Heights) threw for 70 yards and one touchdown on five completions. Wide receiver Russ Forchion (sr. Clementon, NJ/Hammonton) made two catches for 18 yards. Wideout Zac Frantz (jr. Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) caught a 38-yard touchdown pass.

 

Linebacker Darren Dungee (sr. Morristown, NJ/Morristown) collected 14 tackles and an interception. Defensive lineman Jeff Rodriguez (jr. Woodbridge, NJ/Woodbridge) made 13 stops and had a pick. Defensive lineman Josh Popper (sr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Holy Spirit) had eight tackles. Cornerback Eddie Davis (sr. Camden, NJ/Camden) accumulated four tackles, forced and recovered a fumble, had an interception and a pass break-up.

 

For Frostburg State, quarterback Connor Cox (fr. Davidson, MD/South River) completed 19 passes in 31 attempts for 185 yards and a touchdown. He also ran the ball 14 times for 38 yards. Running back Gavin Lavat (fr. Edgewater, MD/Dematha) rushed 13 times for 32 yards and had four receptions for 50 yards and one score. Wide receivers Antonio Wood (sr. Kettering, MD/Forestville Academy) and Myles Burgess (sr. Salibury, MD/Wicomico) each made five catches for 37 and 36 yards respectively.

 

Defensive back Salaman Riddell (sr. Millersville, MD/Old Mill) tallied nine tackles. Defensive lineman William Sewell (jr. Silver Spring, MD/James H. Blake) chipped in with seven tackles, including 1.5 for a loss (3 yards). Linebacker Lyle Fugate (jr. Marriottsville, MD/Marriotts Ridge) contributed with four tackles, two sacks (19 yards) and forced a fumble.

 

Frostburg State scored the only points of the first half on a 37-yard pitch and catch from Cox to Lavat at the 8:04 mark of the first quarter. The seven-play, 86-yard drive took just 2:48 and included 69 yards in the air by Cox. The snap on the point after attempt was fumbled and the Bobcats led 6-0.

 

In the third quarter, Rodriguez forced a fumble that was recovered by defensive lineman Darrian Pierce (sr. Lawnside, NJ/Haddon Heights) at the Frostburg State 39 yard line. On the Profs' second play from scrimmage, Pinckney hit Frantz for a 38-yard touchdown (9:53). The point after attempted was successful and Rowan took a 7-6 advantage.

 

Dungee intercepted a pass at the Bobcats' 16 yard line in the fourth quarter. Marcelin ran the ball into the end zone from six yards out with 5:47 remaining. The hold on the point after attempt was fumbled, but Mark Diedrichsen (jr. Wayside, NJ/Ocean Twp.) scooped up the ball and ran across the goal line for a two-point conversion and a 15-6 lead.

 

Rowan travels to Kean University on Saturday, Nov. 7 for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
