Boxers rebound with 49-28 win over Pios

More news about: Pacific

PORTLAND, Ore. — Pacific spotted host Lewis & Clark an opening drive score but then responded with 42 unanswered points to blow past the Pioneers 49-28 on Saturday afternoon at Griswold Stadium.

The victory gets the Boxers back on the winning track after a loss to Linfield last week and improves their overall mark to 4-2. They are 2-1 in the Northwest Conference. Lewis & Clark dropped to 0-5 on the year and to 0-3 in the NWC, dropping their 19th consecutive game.

But the opening moments belonged to the Pioneers in front of a homecoming crowd of -- on Palantine Hill. Lewis & Clark used 10 plays to march 67 yards after receiving the opening kick-off, scoring on a five yard scoring toss from Niko Fortino to Dejou Williams.

Meanwhile, the Boxers did not score on its first two possessions and the Pioneers moved deep into Pacific territory on its next opportunity before giving the ball back to the visitors.

But after that it was all Pacific. The Boxers scored on the final play of the first quarter on a split end screen from Warner Shaw to Nathan Suyematsu for 67 yards. They would score on four straight possessions in all, including another Shaw to Suyematsu connection, this one for 29 yards. Kamana Pimental added a four-yard scoring run and then Shaw found Chad Aragon on another split end screen from 15 yards out for the sophomore receiver's first collegiate score to make it 28-7 at the break.

The Pioneers stopped the Boxers on the first drive of the second half, but the Boxers would score the next two times they touched the ball to put the game out of reach. Shaw would throw his fourth touchdown pass of the game, this time to Jason Smith for 33 yards. Bronson Barretto would add more with a one-yard run to give Pacific a 42-7 lead midway through the third quarter.

Lewis & Clark would score three times in the fourth quarter with the outcome already in hand. Barretto added another Pacific touchdown run to the total with a four-year dash for six points.

Shaw, who did not play in the fourth quarter, finished with sparkling numbers. He completed 14 of 18 passes for 239 yards and the four scores. Suyematsu finished with five catches for 122 yards andJames Berry added five grabs for 57 yards. Barretto rushed for 68 yards on 13 carries and Greg Alipran for 50 yards in 10 attempts. Pacific finished with 408 yards of total offense in the game.

The Pacific defense was nails after the first two Pioneer possessions. From that point on, Lewis & Clark didn't cross its own 40-yard line until three minutes were left in the third quarter. The Boxers had seven quarterback sacks in the game for 44 yards in losses and 13 tackles for loss for a total of 61 yards. Jeff Bejema had three of those quarterback put downs. The Pioneer rushing totals listed at -28 yards.

"We got back on the winning track against a team that was hungry to win," said Pacific head coachKeith Buckley. "It wasn't always pretty but we did a lot of things right today to turn things back around in the right direction."

After two consecutive road games, the Boxers return home next week to host Willamette. Start time at Hanson Stadium will be 1 p.m.
