Britons ride Air Bona

More news about: Albion

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Dominic Bona threw a school record tying six touchdown passes and became Albion College's career leader in touchdown passes as the Britons scored a 72-40 victory over Kalamazoo College in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association football action.

The senior from Pinckney joins nine other Division III quarterbacks who have passed for six touchdowns in a game this season. He has 66 for his career, passing the 62 set by Steve Wasil, the current Briton quarterback coach, during the 2002-05 seasons.

"We're hard to beat when Dominic is on," Head Coach Craig Rundle said after the Britons improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 against league rivals.

Bona was on target from the start, hooking up with Joe Mayone for a 64-yard touchdown on the first play of the game.

Albion came away empty on its second possession when running back Mike Czarnecki lost a fumble at the Kalamazoo 5 yard line, but the defense stuffed Kalamazoo on consecutive plays for a safety.Collin Ahrens and David Van Ittersum sacked quarterback Alex White on the first play, and Jarett Bochniak hit Elijah Hamilton-Wray in the end zone on the next snap.

It looked like Albion would run away after Bona hooked up with Kyle Slotnick for a 24-yard score to push the Briton lead to 16-0 with 4:43 left in the first quarter.

Kalamazoo answered with a seven play, 61-yard drive capped by Viet Nguyen's 21-yard field goal and Octavius Sanders returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown as the Briton lead melted to 16-10 with two minutes left in the first quarter.

Albion took control in the third quarter as Bona threw three touchdown passes and Czarnecki scored from a yard out.

Rundle was pleased with the offensive balance as Albion chewed up 303 rushing yards while throwing for 362. Colin Parks averaged nearly 12 yards per carry, finishing with 129 yards and two touchdowns. Czarnecki averaged nearly nine yards per carry, finishing with 114 yards.

Nine receivers caught passes with Jon Alandt, Chris McCall and Mikal McKoy hauling in six passes apiece. Mayone was the big play receiver, rolling up 114 yards on four receptions.

Kalamazoo finished with 544 yards. Linebacker Harrison Plaskey wrapped up 11 tackles and was credited with 1 ½ tackles for loss. Jeremy Shephard and Vince Plaskey came away with interceptions.

Next up for Albion is an Oct. 17 Homecoming date with Adrian College. Kickoff is set for 1 o'clock at Sprankle-Sprandel Stadium.
