HSU Routs Wayland Baptist

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' football team won the West Texas Baptist bowl with a 49-7 win over Wayland Baptist on Saturday after at Shelton Stadium.

HSU took control on the opening possession of the game. Wayland Baptist took the opening kickoff but Kylon Mills stuck his head in the first play of the game and forced a fumble. HSU cashed it in for a touchdown four plays later when Weston Garner avoided a rush and found Reese Childress for a 7-yard touchdown pass.

Mills was at it again in the second possession as he picked off a Payson Bain pass. The Cowboys missed a field goal however. HSU forced a quick three-and-out and HSU went 51 yards in eight plays and Garner found the endzone with his legs from two yards out.

The Cowboys forced a third turnover of the first quarter on the next rive when Tavish Leffallknocked the ball away from V.J. Gomez and Korey Zavala recovered it.

Garner then hit Jessie Ramos on a 42-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-0 in the first quarter.

After Ryne Lewis picked up a sack on a fourth-down try for WBU, HSU took over again and went 51 yards in nine plays and Jeremy Harris capped the drive with an 8-yard touchdown run.

HSU forced another punt and the Cowboys went 61 yards in nine plays and Ryan Breton found Alex Bell for a 7-yard touchdown to make it 35-0 and it stayed that way through halftime.

The Cowboys went up top to Jessie Ramos for a 66-yard touchdown pass from Garner on the first play of the second half and that ended the day for the Cowboy offensive starters with a 42-0 lead.

WBU lined up for a 59-yard field goal on the next drive but the snap got away and HSU recorded a tackle for loss at the 50 to set up a short field. Breton scored on a 2-yard touchdown run and it was 49-0 with 4:59 to play in the third.

WBU scored the only other points in the game on a 69-yard touchdown pass from Bain to Devonte Hayden.

The Cowboys rolled up 600 yards of offense with 426 through the air and another 174 on the ground. HSU forced three turnovers, all in the first quarter, and held the Pioneers to 270 yards of offense on 73 plays, just 3.7 yards per play.

Garner completed 13-of-18 passes for 269 yards and three touchdowns. Ryan Breton was 9-for-13 for 109 yards and Luke Bishop was 7-for-10 for 49 yards. Jeremy Harris had 91 yards on the ground and Kerry Sloan had 70 yards on 11 carries.

Jessie Ramos caught 10 passes for 237 yards and two touchdowns. He also broke the HSU career all-purpose yardage record of Collin McCormick. He now has 4,706 career all-purpose yards.

The Cowboys had an all-around good defensive effort with 11 different Cowboys recording between four and six tackles. Ryne Lewis and Trent Walker each had two sacks. Mills had six tackles, forced a fumble, had an interception and broke up three passes. HSU had seven sacks in the game.

HSU is now 3-0 on the year and will be off next week before traveling to Trinity on Oct. 3. Wayland Baptist fell to 2-1 on the year.
 

Game Notes

  • HSU is 3-0 for the first times since 2010.
  • The Cowboys are now 4-0 all-time against Wayland Baptist.
  • Weston Garner moved to 10th all-time in career touchdown passes with 26.
  • Ramos moved to third on the HSU career receiving touchdown charts with 27. He only trails Kirk Rogers (50) and Mychal Carrillo (38) on the career chart.
  • James Place recorded the 200th tackle of his career. He is six tackles away from the top 10 in HSU history.
  • Ryne Lewis moved to a fifth-place tie with Undra Hendrix for career sacks with 15.5.
  • Garrett Martin had his second career blocked kick.
  • Ramos had 237 yards receiving, which was the fourth-best performance in school history and he only played one series in the second half.
