Senior Matt Kroll of Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven HS), matched his career-high with 145 yards receiving for the Hope College football team in a 13-7 loss at Elmhurst, Illinois on Saturday.
Kroll caught a career-high nine receptions against the Blue Jays (2-0) to match the receiving yardage he had in a 37-27 win over visiting Augustana, Illinois on Sept. 13, 2014 at Smith Stadium.
The Flying Dutchmen dropped to 0-2 on the season after the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association – College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin crossover.
Hope held Elmhurst to one touchdown and two field goals — all in the first half — despite being outgained 362-286 and losing time of possession 38:05 to 21:55.
The Flying Dutchmen cut their deficit to 13-7 with 20 seconds remaining in the first half after a 55-yard drive ended with an 11-yard touchdown catch for senior receiver Jake Helm of Holland, Michigan (Holland HS), from senior quarterback Rob Kish of Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan (Grosse Pointe South HS).
Hope twice drove inside the Elmhurst 30-yard line during the second half but could not produce any points.
Senior safety Colin Kelly of Troy, Michigan (Shrine Catholic HS), led the Flying Dutch with 10 tackles.
Hope returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 19 when the Flying Dutchmen host Concordia, Wisconsin in the MIAA-Northern Athletics College Conference Challenge Series. Kickoff is 1 p.m. at Smith Stadium.
