Hawks Roll to 41-14 Victory Over Apprentice

           ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick scored the game's opening 34 points in a 41-14 rout of visiting Apprentice School for the team's second straight win on Saturday at Wright Stadium. The Hawks scored three touchdowns, including two defensive scores in the first 17 and a half minutes, to take command early. The Hawks' offense would rack up 458 yards of offense on the day, 284 through the air and 174 on the ground.
            The Hawks started quickly as linebacker Matthew Ali (Sayville, NY/Sayville) batted the Builders' first pass into the air which was caught and ran back for a 25-yard touchdown by safety Cory Wood (Hauppage, NY/Hauppage) three minutes into the first quarter.
            Tito Pichardo's (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) one-yard run extended the Hawks' lead less than a minute into the second quarter and Korey Jubie's (Kingston, NY/Kingston) second straight PAT made it 14-0 Hawks.
            On the Builders' third play from scrimmage after getting the ball back, Frank Sorrenti (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) forced a fumble and tackle Anthony Rotunno (Hawthorne, NY/Westlake) scooped the ball up and ran it back 42 yards for the score and a 20-0 Hartwick advantage.
            Hartwick wasn't done as quarterback John Garcia (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) and wide receiver Brad Garcia (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) connected for their fifth touchdown of the season with 42 ticks left in the half. This one was for 21 yards and following Jubie's extra point,  the Hawks went into halftime holding a 27-0 edge over the visitors.
            Huge scoring plays highlighted the second half for the Hawks. The first was a 97-yard touchdown reception by senior wide receiver Tanner Williams (Eagle Bridge, NY/Hoosick Falls) with 4:24 left in the third quarter. Quarterback Billy Pine (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls) scored the Hawks' final touchdown with 6:47 left in the game on a 65-yard touchdown run.
            Pichardo would end the day with his first collegiate 100-yard rushing performance. He finished with 101 yards on 10 carries. Williams closed the game with three catches for 167 yards. Brad Garcia caught four passes for 88 yards. John Garcia threw for 263 yards and two scores on 11 completions.
            The Hartwick defense would record 10 tackles for a loss of 44 yards in the game. Defensive lineman Nick Sorrenti (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) led all players with nine tackles. Malik Wynter (Auburn, NY/Auburn), Ali, and Chris Mercieca (Centereach, NY/Centereach) all registered six hits. Ali would record the Hawks' lone sack to go along with his defended pass which led to Hartwick's first touchdown. Mark Hackett (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls) contributed six hits for 'Wick and Melijah Purvis (West Babylon, NY/North Babylon) had a pick, a team-high two passes defended and two tackles.
            Hartwick takes its 2-0 record into Empire 8 Conference play next weekend. The Hawks open on the road at Brockport on Saturday, September 19. Kickoff between the Hawks and Golden Eagles is set for noon.
