THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Athletics Department hosted its annual Athletic Awards Banquet on Tuesday evening in the Special Events Room inside Heritage Hall on the Maritime College Campus. The department celebrated the achievements both academically and athletically of its student-athletes, with several outstanding student-athletes and individuals recognized for their contributions to the success of Maritime Athletics.
 
The night began with a dinner served to the guests, and a welcoming address from Director of Athletics Heather MacCulloch. That was followed by an address by the Maritime College President, Michael Alfultis, followed by the first awards of the evening, the SUNY Chancellor Scholar-Athlete Award.
 
Established in 2004-05, the Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award is one of the most selective and prestigious awards bestowed by the State University of New York (SUNY).  The award recognizes a combination of academic excellence and outstanding athletic achievement. Since that time, 23 Maritime student-athletes have been named recipients of the prestigious award that is offered to student-athletes throughout the SUNY System, including the Division I, Division III and NJCAA programs.
 
Earning the distinction this past year was senior Hayley Hobbs (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) of the women's swimming team, and junior Beau Warrington (Milford, Del./Sussex Technical) of the football team.
 
Hobbs is majoring in Naval Architecture at Maritime and is a member of the NROTC program at Maritime. As a three-year member of the women's swimming team, Hobbs dominated in the 100 Butterfly in each of the past two Skyline Conference Championship Meets, en route to back-to-back All-Conference First Team selections. She was also a second team selection in the 400 Freestyle Relay in 2015, and was also a First-Team All-Conference selection in the 200 Butterfly in 2014. Academically, she was also named to the inaugural Athletic Director's Academic Honor Roll in late January with a Fall 2014 grade-point average of 3.00 or better.
 
Warrington is majoring in Marine Transportation at Maritime and will be obtaining his U.S. Coast Guard Deck License upon graduation. The junior defensive back is a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-Region Recipient for District Three and is a two-time member of the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference's Academic All-Conference team for each of the past two seasons. On the field, he led Maritime with pass breakups this past year, while totaling 73 tackles, 12 pass breakups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery for a touchdown in his career. He too was named to the Athletic Director's Academic Honor Roll in late January.
 
The inductees to the Chi Alpha Sigma National Student-Athlete Honor Society was announced next with six new inductees into the chapter, in addition to one second-year recipient. In order to be inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, student-athletes must have obtained a varsity letter in their sport while also maintaining a 3.40 GPA or higher throughout their junior or senior years.
 
Those inducted for the first time were senior Kevin Logar (Breezy Point, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) of men's swimming, and juniors Jimmy Keegan (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) from dinghy sailing, John Nothacker (Philadelphia, Pa./Homeschooled) from dinghy sailing and men's soccer, Caroline Reynolds (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) from women's soccer and lacrosse, Paul Woodburn (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) from baseball, and Warrington for football.
 
Earning the distinction of a second-year honoree was senior Chris Whalen (Altamont, N.Y./Guilderland) from the dinghy sailing team.
 
Finally, the academic All-Conference recipients were announced with 34 total student-athletes having been named to their respective academic all-conference teams from the Winter 2013-14, Spring 2014, and Fall 2014 seasons. The Winter 2014-15, and Spring 2015 Academic All-Conference teams will be announced by the Skyline Conference in June.
 
Up next was the team-by-team awards as each team had a Coach's Award and team Most Valuable Player selected for this past athletic season. Below is a list of those earning the awards for each of their respective teams.
 

 
Maritime's four-year senior athletes were recognized next for their service and dedication to their respective teams and the entire department.
 
Those seniors who have competed in their sports were; Ann Boston (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes), Faye Dohring (Schenectady, N.Y./Niskayuna), and Victoria O'Reilly (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) from women's rowing, Gabrielle Fox (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg), and Jaime Rocco (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) from women's soccer, Mariel VanderLinden (Woodside, N.Y./Dominican Academy ) from women's swimming and Sydney Carella (Greenville, N.Y./Greenville) from volleyball.
 
The male athletes who spent four seasons with their respective teams were Albert Doerbecker (Point Lookout, N.Y./Long Beach), Pat Kirk (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep), Joe Longo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), Paul Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park), and Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) from baseball, T'Vaughn Gibson (Freeport, Bahamas/Sunland Baptist Academy) from basketball, Dan Martens (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) from men's lacrosse, Devon Toscano (Millbrook, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes ) and Chris Lazarides (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) from men's crew, Zach Harris (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville South) and Chris Whalen (Altamont, N.Y./Guilderland) from dinghy sailing, Thomas Callahan (Northport, N.Y./Northport ), Evan Kinkel (Annapolis, Md./South River Senior), and Joel Kinkel (Annapolis, Md./South River Senior) from offshore sailing, Matt Ciruzzi (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac), Chris Haffner (West Hempstead, N.Y./Kellenberg) and David Hraska, Jr., from men's soccer, Zach Haughn (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep), Jimmy Jorgenson (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) and Collin McNamara (Somerville, N.J./St. Joseph-Metuchen) from men's swimming and Chris Aiello (Belle Harbor, N.Y./Xaverian), Duke Alvora (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison), Casey Boos (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville), Greg Caneparo (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet), Nick Coffiey (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy), Jimmy Daly (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside), Kyle Gardner (Amityville N.Y./St. Anthony's), Chris Klass (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet), Hugh O'Brien (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) and Chris Shehata (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) from football.
 
The individual awards were given out next, with the first Outstanding Student Worker award given to junior Matt Romanuski from the dinghy sailing team for his service as both a weight room supervisor as well as his work in the Maritime sports information office.
 
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee President Gabrielle  Fox gave out the next award, which was the SAAC Appreciation Award. The award was given to Maritime College President Michael Alfultis for his dedication to the Maritime Athletics Department in just his first year at the college.
 
The Distinguished Privateer Service Award was given to Jason Vega of the Maintenance Department at Maritime College, for his support and outstanding service that he has provided to the Athletic Department.
 
The final awards were given out in closing as Maritime named its female and male Athletes of the Year. Earning the award from the women's rowing team was senior Ann  Boston. The integral part of the women's rowing team has been a part of every pairs race from her sophomore through senior season, and is also a leader on campus with numerous positions outside of athletics.
 
The male Athlete of the Year was senior T'Vaughn  Gibson of the Maritime men's basketball team, as Gibson was also a four-year member of his team. Over the course of his career, Gibson broke the scoring record for points in a game, while also eclipsing the 1,000 career points mark during his senior year. He finished his career as the all-time three-point basket leader and was also amongst the all-time leaders in steals and rebounds.
 
The evening concluded with alum Drew Hodgens '92 of the Maritime men's crew and swimming teams, as he reflected on his time at Maritime and gave the soon-to-be graduates of Maritime advice on how to succeed in life, and to also give back to those who may not be as fortunate.
