Former UW-Whitewater Standout Blanchard Signs With Packers

More news about: UW-Whitewater

Matt Blanchard, a standout quarterback for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team from 2009-11, has signed a contract to play for the Green Bay Packers, his agent, Paul Sheehy, announced Wednesday, April 15.

Blanchard, who helped lead the Warhawks to three consecutive NCAA Division III national championships, three straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles and a 45-0 record, projects as the Packers' No. 3 quarterback behind reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers and former University of Wisconsin quarterback Scott Tolzien.

A native of Lake Zurich, Ill., Blanchard transferred from Northern Michigan University and backed up All-American Jeff Donovan in 2009. He became the starter in 2010, when he threw for 2,132 yards and 21 touchdowns against just one interception in 10 games played. Blanchard was injured just prior to the playoffs and missed the postseason.

In 2011, Blanchard returned and threw for 2,852 yards and 23 touchdowns to help lead UW-Whitewater to its fourth national title in the last five years. He was named first team All-WIAC for the second straight season and a third team All-American by D3football.com.

Blanchard is the program's all-time leader in completion percentage (70.4 percent) and currently ranks among career leaders in yards (5,106), touchdowns (44), completions (393), attempts (558) and consecutive attempts without an interception (212).

The Chicago Bears picked up Blanchard as a free agent in 2012, and Blanchard spent just over a season with the franchise before finishing the 2013 campaign as a member of the Carolina Panthers' practice squad.

He returned to Carolina in 2014, but was placed on injured reserve after suffering a concussion during the preseason.

Blanchard is one of 24 former Warhawks who have played professionally.
