Dowdle's 3 TD catches lift Toms

More news about: St. Thomas

Junior QB John Gould was sharp in his first start of 2014 as he guided a Tommie attack to 509 yards of offense and five TDs in Saturday's 35-32 comeback victory over No. 19-ranked Concordia-Moorhead in MIAC football at O'Shaughnessy Stadium in St. Paul.

St. Thomas (6-1 overall, 4-2 MIAC) won a game that featured four fourth-quarter lead changes and 978 yards of offense on a sunny, cool day at Palmer Field. Coming off a 35-24 defeat at No. 11-ranked Bethel, UST was looking to avoid the first two-game losing streak of the seven-season Glenn Caruso era.

Gould, who started one previous game in 2013, threw four TD passes and ran for a fifth touchdown. He passed for 298 yards as he completed 15-of-23 with one picked off in the end zone on an excellent grab by Cobber Matt Ahrndt. Gould guided an offense that converted 8-of-11 on third and fourth downs.

Charlie Dowdle caught a career-best three touchdown passes, including a 59-yarder with 4:29 left that erased a 32-28 Cobber lead. Dowdle closed with five receptions for 105 yards, and Jack Gilliland had three catches for 100 yards including a 37-yard TD in the first quarter.

Junior RB Jack Kaiser had a season-best 157 rushing yards on 23 carries.

The Cobbers (7-2, 5-2) were driving for a tying or go-ahead score but UST's Sean Hamlin's interception near midfield with 1:57 to go ended the last Cobber threat. St. Thomas rushed for two first downs and ran out the clock and secured its seventh consecutive win over the Cobbers.

Concordia rushed for 324 yards without a 100-yard rusher. Brandon Zylstra had six catches for 100 yards and one TD. Senior QB Griffin Neal had two TD runs, rushed for 82 yards and passed for 145 yards.
