More news about: Hope

Senior Kirby Crook moved up the Hope College recordbook for interceptions, but the Flying Dutchmen lost 27-19 at Adrian on Saturday.

The loss cost Hope a chance to play for first place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association standings next week when they host Trine.

The Flying Dutchmen now are 5-3 on the season and 2-2 in MIAA play.

Crook now has seven interceptions on the season. He is tied for second all-time at Hope with Kelly Clark (1991) and Randy Ames (1996). Joe Diekevers (2004) holds the record of nine.

The defensive back from Beech Grove, Indiana (Beech Grove HS), also moved into a second-place tie in career interceptions with 16. He shares that spot with Troy Blasius (2004-07). They are two behind recordholder Kelly Clark (1989-92).

Senior running back Brandon Zervas of Spring Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake HS), scored on a 7-yard run with 1 minute, 17 seconds remaining in the second quarter to give the Flying Dutchmen a 13-3 halftime lead.

The Flying Dutchmen also received first-half field goals of 29 and 36 yards from senior Aaron Mick of Clinton Township, Michigan (Parkway Christian HS).

Adrian (6-2, 3-1 MIAA) took a 20-17 lead with 17 unanswered points during the third quarter.

Junior receiver Matt Kroll of Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven HS), caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Rob Kish of Grosse Pointe, Michigan (Grosse Pointe South HS), to cut Adrian's lead to 27-19 with 1:14 remaining. Hope's PAT kick failed.

The Flying Dutchmen then tried an onside kick, but Adrian recovered.

Senior Stephen Gerger of Laingsburg, Michigan (Laingsburg HS), recorded 2 ½ sacks to give him a team-leading nine for the season. Hope totaled five sacks during the game.

Hope forced four turnovers — three interceptions and one fumble recovery.

Kickoff against Trine is Saturday, Nov. 8, at 1 p.m. at Smith Stadium.
