Hope Football Downs Olivet 42-35 In Overtime

Taylor Brynaert and Kirby Crook made it a thrilling homecoming finish for the Hope College football team. The two seniors caught the final two passes of Saturday's game to secure a 42-35 overtime win against Olivet.

Brynaert caught a 16-yard, go-ahead touchdown pass in overtime in the left corner of the south end zone at Smith Stadium.

Crook then leapt for a game-ending interception in the right corner of the south end zone on Olivet's second offensive play in overtime.

Hope improved to 4-2 overall and remained in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association title chase by evening its league record at 1-1.

The Flying Dutchmen raised their homecoming record to 51-30-3.

The overtime game was the Flying Dutchmen's ninth in team history and the second this season. Hope is now 5-4 all-time in overtime games and 2-2 at Smith Stadium.

Junior Rob Kish of Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan (Grosse Pointe South HS), threw a career-high five touchdown passes against Olivet (3-3, 1-2 MIAA).

Three of them went to Brynaert, a receiver from Washington, Michigan (Romeo HS).

Brynaert recorded a team-high eight receptions for 127 yards. He had touchdown catches of 31, 16 and 16 yards.

Kish's 5-yard strike to junior tight end Jake Helm of Holland, Michigan (Holland HS) tied the score at 35-35 with 2:40 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Kish also connected with junior Matt Kroll of Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven HS) on a 11-yard touchdown pass.

Kish completed 19-of-37 passes for 215 yards and one interception.

Senior running back Reggie Duncan of Williamston, Michigan (Williamston HS), also scored on a 1-yard touchdown run.

The Hope defense forced six turnovers, including five by interception.

Senior linebacker Cody Lindemulder of Mulliken, Michigan (Lakewood HS), collected two of them.

Cook, sophomore Andrew Lucas of McBain, Michigan (McBain HS), and senior defensive end Brett Stewart of Kalamazoo, Michigan (Comstock HS), each had one.

The Flying Dutchmen return to action on Saturday, Oct. 25 at Alma.
