Olivet football squanders lead in 46-42 loss to Trine

OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College football team led Trine (Ind.) University, 42-24, before the Thunder scored 21 unanswered points to beat the Comets, 46-42, today at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair. Olivet took an early 7-0 lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by sophomore Damorria Lilly. Trine answered with its own touchdown. After the teams traded punts, the Comets took a 14-7 lead on a 24-yard touchdown pass from junior Braden Black to freshman Kornelius Saxton.

The Thunder forged a 14-14 tie and went ahead for the first time on a 23-yard field goal. Olivet took a 21-17 halftime lead on a 6-yard touchdown run by Lilly.

The Comets forced Trine to punt on its first possession of the second half. Olivet then stretched its lead to 28-17 on a 13-yard touchdown run by sophomore Chris Jones. The Thunder responded with a score. The Comets regained their 11-point lead on Lilly's 18-yard touchdown run.

Junior Beau Langs intercepted a Trine pass to set-up the next Olivet score, a 5-yard run for Lilly. The touchdown made the score 42-24.

The Thunder cut their deficit down to 42-31 on a 54-yard touchdown pass from Taylor Masiewicz to Anthony Yoder with three seconds left in the third quarter.

Olivet was stopped on fourth down on its first series of the final quarter. Trine marched down the field and scored a touchdown and added a two-point conversion to make the score 42-39. The Comets had also their next drive halted on fourth down.

On the Thunder's second play from scrimmage, Yoder caught an 80-yard touchdown pass for a 46-42 lead with 1:57 left in the game. Olivet got the ball back before an interception was thrown to end the game.

The Comets amassed 553 yards of offense. Lilly led the ground game with 33 carries for 219 yards and four touchdowns. Black was 23-of-36 for 272 yards. Junior Kyle Bryson caught nine passes for 80 yards, while junior Jason Barbosa had five catches for 71 yards. Defensively, senior Ryan Armstrong and sophomore Andrew Pabst recorded seven tackles each.

Olivet looks to bounce back from the loss next Saturday, Oct. 18, when it travels to play Hope College at 2 p.m.
