UW-Oshkosh Rallies in Fourth Quarter for Victory

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse football team fell 21-18 to UW-Oshkosh Saturday afternoon at Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex.  The Eagles drop to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Titans improve to 2-3 overall and 2-0 in the conference.  UW-Oshkosh earned its fourth straight win over UW-L with Saturday's victory.

The teams traded punts on the first five possessions of the game before UW-L's Josh Huempfner returned a Brett Kasper interception 46-yards down to the UW-Oshkosh eight-yard line with 1:57 left in the opening quarter.  On the next play from scrimmage, Trent Cummings hit Tony Favre for an eight-yard touchdown pass with 1:50 remaining.  Joshua Fischer's extra-point attempt was missed. 

The Titans' Tyler Parker fumbled on the next drive of the game with the Eagles' Drew Graf recovering at the UW-L 43-yard line.  The Eagles went 43 yards on 12 plays and 6:03 with Fischer connecting on a 32-yard field goal to give UW-L a 9-0 lead with 10:24 left in the second quarter. 

UW-Oshkosh came right back on its next possession to cut the lead to 9-7 with Dylan Hecker scoring on a seven-yard run with 7:14 remaining in the first half.  The Titans went 72 yards on seven plays and 3:06. Nate Ray's extra-point was good. 

UW-L took a 15-7 lead on the next drive of the game with Cummings throwing a 12-yard touchdown pass to Chris Stackhouse. Cummings was three-of-four on the drive.  The touchdown came with 3:18 left in the second quarter as the Eagles went 61 yards on nine plays and 3:57.  Fischer's extra-point failed for the second time. 

UW-L led 15-7 at halftime.

On the first drive of the second half, UW-Oshkosh drove to the UW-L 13-yard line, but Kasper was intercepted by Jacob Flegner at the Eagles' three-yard line.  Flegner returned the interception 12-yards.  UW-L was forced to punt on the ensuing drive and UW-Oshkosh drove to the UW-L 36-yard line.  On fourth-and-two, Hecker was stopped for a one-yard gain by Zackary Kleven with UW-L taking over at its own 35-yard line.

The teams traded punts on the next two possessions.  Early in the fourth quarter, Parker fumbled at the UW-L 43-yard line with Peter Krien recovering for the fourth UW-Oshkosh turnover of the game.  After a pair of punts, UW-L took a 18-7 lead with 6:35 left in the game as Fischer hit from 37-yards out.  The Eagles went 38 yards on six plays and 2:08. 

Each team punted on its next drives before UW-Oshkosh started its comeback.  The Titans cut the lead to 18-13 with 2:30 remaining as Kasper connected with Zach Kasuboski on an eight-yard touchdown pass.  UW-Oshkosh went for two points, but Kasper's pass attempted failed.  The Titans went 48 yards on four plays and 1:11 to cut the margin to five. 

UW-Oshkosh then recovered an on-side kick with 2:28 left in the game.  Kasper went six-of-seven on the following drive to move the Titans to the Eagles' two-yard line where Hecker scored on a two-yard run with :44 remaining.  Kasuboski's two-point rush attempt was good for a 21-18 UW-Oshkosh lead.  The Titans went 54 yards on nine plays and 1:49. 

UW-L started its final drive at its own 37-yard line with :39 left.  Facing third-and-five from its own 42, Cummings hit Jared Stan with a 41-yard completion down to the UW-Oshkosh 17-yard line.  One play later, Cummings threw a 19-yard pass to Tony Bilderback, but Bilderback was ruled out of the end zone. UW-L was then called for a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct setting it up at the UW-Oshkosh 34-yard line. Two incompletions ended the game, including a hail mary on the final play of the game.

UW-L finished with 232 yards of offense, including 97 rushing and 135 passing. Ben Hertrampf recorded 90 yards rushing on 20 attempts (4.5 average).  Cummings went 17-of-30 passing for 135 yards with two touchdowns. He was sacked five times.  Bilderback caught five passes for 51 yards while Favre had three receptions for 24 yards. 

The Eagles had 14 first downs while finishing six-of-18 on third-down.  UW-L was four-of-five in the red-zone.

UW-O totaled 388 yards, including 189 rushing and 199 passing.  Hecker finished with 110 yards rushing on 17 attempts (6.5 average) while Ethan Steinhoff had 43 yards and 15 carries.  Kasper went 25-of-33 for 195 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.  He was sacked once.  Sam Mentkowski caught 10 passes for 58 yards while Joe Sommers had six catches for 55 yards. 

The Titans had 20 first downs and went three-of-13 on third-down.  UW-Oshkosh won the time of possession, 31:13 to 28:47 and were two-of-three in red-zone opportunities. 

Mitch Hawkins led UW-L with 16 tackles, including 10 unassisted.  He added 1.0 tackle for loss and one forced fumble. Peter Krien (seven unassisted) and Shane Rockweiler (six) each had 11 tackles overall.  Krien had one fumble recovery while Rockweiler had 2.0 tackles for loss.  Along with the interception, Flegner had a forced fumble and eight tackles (seven unassisted). Zach Wall finished with eight tackles, including five unassisted, with 1.0 tackle for loss. 

Reese Dziedzic led UW-Oshkosh with 12 tackles.  Five different players had a quarterback sack for the Titans.

UW-L returns to action Saturday, October 18 hosting UW-Stout at 1 p.m.
