Fast start fuels St. Thomas home victory

Sophomore RB Nick Waldvogel had touchdown runs of 19, 2 and 31 yards and finished with 201 all-purpose yards as the host Tommies (4-1 overall, 2-1 MIAC) used a fast start en route to a 45-27 win over Augsburg (2-3, 1-2) in Saturday's MIAC football play at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.

No. 25-ranked UST broke to a 35-0 second quarter lead aided by two takeaways on defense and a successful onside kick. They extended the lead to 45-7 in the third quarter.

Augsburg junior Aryton Scott threw three TD passes to Joey Sonnenfeld (4, 46, 16 yards) in the game's final 17:00. Scott closed with 181 passing yards and 73 rushing yards, as Sonnenfeld added 105 receiving yards. Jerise Washington rushed for 90 yards and had 108 all-purpose yards. 
St. Thomas rushed for 283 yards and passed for 194. The Toms improved to 7-0 in Homecoming games under Coach Glenn Caruso and have won 22 consecutive games against the Auggies at O'Shaughnessy Stadium since a 1970 loss. St. Thomas rushed for 283 yards and passed for 194.

UST lined up to punt just twice as it rolled up 331 yards in the first half.

The Tommies play next Saturday at Hamline.
