Berry lost defensive battle to Rhodes

ROME, Ga. – Rhodes College defeated Berry College, 12-0, in a defensive battle at Barron Stadium on Saturday.

The Lynx improved to 4-0 and 1-0 in the Southern Athletic Association. The Vikings dropped to 0-3 and 0-1. 

The contest was scoreless after one quarter of play. Rhodes recorded the game's only touchdown with 11:18 remaining in the first half when Matt Baldwin caught a three-yard touchdown pass from Blake Box. Tucker Nichols' PAT made the score 7-0.

Nichols pushed the margin to 10-0 with a 29-yard field goal with 2:144 left in the second quarter.

The Vikings, however, did have chances to score in the game. Campbell Harrison field goals from 37 and 42 yards in the opening half. Additionally, Dale Jackson (7-22, 68 yards) had an openMethus Weldon in the end zone on a fourth down, but they couldn't connect.

As for punting, Patrick Knight of Rhodes averaged 47.4 yards on nine boots and placed three inside the 10-yard line. Mitchell Blanchard had another solid effort with a 41.7 average on seven attempt. Knight had a 64-yard punt and Blanchard's best was 53 yards.

The only points in the final half came in the third quarter after a Knight punt pinned the BC offense on the one-yard line. On the next play, Terry Hopper tackled Jalen Tuggle in the end zone for a safety and Rhode's last 2 points of the game.  

The Viking defense held the Lynx to 207 yards--by far a program-best. BC, however, could only muster 94 offensive yards.

Matt Farinella and Drew McCollum both had interceptions in the game for Berry. Farinella andPreston Stewart both collected eight tackles in the game.

"We played a very good team today in Rhodes," said Berry Head Coach Tony Kunczewski. "They are the defending conference champions and I think we proved we can compete with the best. We need to get our offense going and we'll be better when we do."

The Vikings host Washington University of St. Louis next Saturday at 6 p.m. The game will be part of the 100th Mountain Day at Berry and Wash U. will be celebrating its 1000th intercollegiate football game.
