Gallaudet wins ECFC opener with 53-26 rout of Anna Maria

PAXTON, Mass. - The Gallaudet University football team won its Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) opener and first game of the 2014 season on the road against Anna Maria College, 53-26, as three different players rushed for 100 or more yards.

The Bison (1-2, 1-0 ECFC) offense nearly tripled Anna Maria in total offense, gaining 481 yards to the 166 yards accumulated by the AMCATS (0-4, 0-1 ECFC). The majority of the Bison attack came on the ground as GU rolled up 418 rushing yards. Junior co-captain BJ Flores (Raymondville, Texas) led the rushing attack with 140 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries. Flores broke off a 54-yard touchdown run at the 11:23 mark in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

Sophomore David Jones (Washington, D.C.) scored twice as he ran six times for 101 yards, including a 42-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, and caught two passes from freshman quarterback Antoine McKinney (Racine, Wis.) for 49 yards and a 15-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. Freshman Zach Reese (Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.) and John Anderson (Clarksville, Tenn.) also had rushing touchdowns for the Bison. McKinney finished his first collegiate start under center with 63 passing yards (3 of 7) one touchdown and ran the ball 10 times for 14 yards.

Gallaudet scored the game's first 15 points and led 25-6 after the first quarter. Junior kicker Eric Setzer (Middletown, Md.) added a 24-yard field goal. The Bison took a 38-6 lead into halftime.

The defensive unit for the Bison held the AMCATS to -36 yards rushing for a average of -1.2 yards per rush on 31 carries. The stout defensive unit turned the AMCATS over three times resulting in two scores for the Bison. The unit also contributed seven sacks on the day, two coming from Devante Walters (Rockdale, Ga.) for a loss of 17 yards.

Defensive back Toby Canterbury (Chicago, Ill.) led the Gallaudet defensive unit with six solo tackles while Gregg McConville (Frederick, Md.) added five tackles and one sack for a loss of seven yards. Sophomore Carneilus Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) made an interception and two tackles.

Greg McGoldrick passed for 202 yards for the AMCATS as he completed 14 of 34 passes, three touchdowns and one interception. Mike Sinto led the way on defense with 12 tackles (11 solos) in the loss.

The win snaps a four-game losing streak for the Bison dating back to last season. 

Gallaudet returns home on Saturday, Oct. 11, as it takes on Becker College (0-4, 0-1 ECFC) at noon.
