Norse Defeat Oles 20-3 in Northfield, Minn.

For the first time since 2003 Luther is off to a 2-0 start. This afternoon, the Norse traveled to St. Olaf College and posted a 20-3 victory. The win was the second in a row over the Oles.

Following a muffed punt attempt by the Oles late in the first quarter, Luther took over on the Oles 25-yard line. Six plays later, JJ Sirios connected with Alex Hain on a 18-yard touchdown pass that gave the Norse what proved to be the lead for good. St. Olaf's only score of the game came on a 22-yard field goal early in the second frame.

The Luther's defensive unit also came up big late in the second quarter. Going for it on fourth and goal from the two, St. Olaf's attempt to score on swing pass, was stopped by Cody Berger and Ethan Murphy for no gain.

In the second half, Luther scored on its first two possessions that ate up a little over 13 minutes on the clock.  Luther's second score of the afternoon was an 11-play, 69-yard drive that took 6:19, capped off with a five-yard plunge by Josh Vos.

Luther extended its lead to 20-3 when Cooper Nelson scored his first career touchdown on a 20-yard scamper early in the fourth. The touchdown run completed a 13-play, 89-yard drive that took 6:42.

Offensively, Luther tallied  271 yards of total offense of which 239 came on the ground. Eight different players carried the football led by Vos who gained 79 yards on 11 carries.

The Norse defensive unit held the Oles to 279 yards of total offense that included 70 on the ground. Jackson Vankirk, Sam Scheidt and Joe Johnson were all credited with a sack. Matt Scheidle recovered the only fumble of the afternoon and Luke Pulliam recorded his first collegiate interception. 

Aric Elton led the team with 10 tackles. Berger and Gabe Saemisch were next with nine each.
