Blugold Football Blanked by Ranked Pioneers on Homecoming

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire football team had a tough time against 18th-ranked UW-Platteville on the Blugolds' Homecoming and Hall of Fame Game, falling 49-0 at Carson Park today.

The game, which was the conference opener for both teams, got away from the Blugolds early.

UW-Platteville scored a touchdown on its opening drive after traveling 70 yards in 16 plays, chewing up over eight minutes to start the game. But the Pioneers led by just one touchdown after one quarter.

The Pioneers then put four more touchdowns on the board in the second quarter to lead 35-0 at halftime and added two more touchdowns in the second half.

The Blugolds threw three interceptions on the day, and all three of them led to touchdowns for the Pioneers. One of the interceptions came in the second quarter and the others came on back-to-back drives in the third quarter.

Eau Claire finished the game with 131 yards of offense, its fewest since Sept. 22, 2007, 66 yards passing and 65 yards rushing. Platteville had 441 yards of total offense, 283 through the air and 158 on the ground.

Mark Munger (Sr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) and Joel Newman (Jr.-Red Wing, Minn.) both saw time at quarterback for the Blugolds. Munger went 5-for-16 with 37 passing yards and three interceptions while Newman threw for 29 yards, going 7-for-13.

Leading the Blugolds in rushing was Riley Gebelein (So.-Marshfield, Wis.) with 49 yards while Brody Diggins (Fr.-Rochester, Minn.) led the Blugolds in receiving with 21 yards on two catches.

Jayden Dobbs (Jr.-Athens, Wis.) led the Blugolds on defense with 10 solo tackles while Jake Safstrom (Sr.-Grafton, Wis.) led the game with two sacks which came on back-to-back plays.

Eau Claire drops to 0-4 on the season and 0-1 in the WIAC while Platteville improves to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

The Blugolds will be at 17th-ranked UW-Stevens Point next Saturday for a game beginning at 1 p.m.
